Hother case repair finished.

I've mentioned the HOTHER case was under repair and this morning I finished it. I won't show pics of the actual bottom repair as it was pretty much the same as the box in the other thread:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...r-t199606.html

Here is the before pics:

And the finished pics:

It turned out very nice. I think my mom would be pleased.

WOWOWOW that's amazing! i saw your instructions earlier and have a case that i'm going to try it on. is that just ordinary fabric on the case? or a vinyl?

grayhare 09-17-2012 06:09 PM

Wow, Joe your case looks great!! How did you deal with the latches, and the handle? Did you take them off, and if so what and how did you put them back on? Did you clean the latches, or are those new? Did you use the same type of fabric as your tutorial case? That is a beautiful looking case! Wow, you did good!! Sorry, for all the questions. Anamaria

Beautiful job Joe. Is there anything you won't tackle? You are definitely a Jack of all trades.

It's a stretch fabric of some kind. My wife says it's a lightweight suede cloth. The only black we could find with some sort of pattern on it.

The latches were badly rusted. They were held on with split rivets. I had to drill them out, then fix the holes and then drill new ones. The screws used were 6x32 brass flat head machine screws. The case latches are new brass plated ones.
The metal parts on the handle was originally nickle or chrome plated but had corroded so I polished them and painted them with gold +Testor's model paint.
The fabric used on this case is a different kind of material that what was used on the other one. We're not sure what the other one was, we bought it quite a while back.

No problem on the questions.

Wow! Terrific case! You do super work!

harrishs 09-18-2012 06:30 AM

Unbelievable! What a great job! I would never have attempted it!

J Miller 09-18-2012 06:53 AM

It even surprises me when I look a the before and after pics. And I did the work.

Your Mom is giving you a pat, pat on the head, Joey. You did a wonderful job turning a sow's ear into a silk purse.

J Miller 09-18-2012 10:46 AM

I've got one more to finish. The Sewmor 404 box. And it's gonna be a two tone box top. Bottom too maybe.

Ditto! What beautiful workmanship.

That is just incredible! I never would have thought you could salvage that case, much less make it so original looking.

J Miller 09-19-2012 02:17 PM

Monroe,

I'll be truthful, when I first pulled it off the shelf where had had been burried behind my wife's sewing supplies for over 12 years I just about tossed it in the trash. But then I thought, all it will take is glue, some wood, fabric, time and effort. I had or could get all of these things. So why not try. If I can't do it, then I'll trash it.

I look at the before and after pics and I'm still amazed at the transformation. Finding a material with the original alligator scale pattern has proven to be impossible. No one's had it locally, and those that did have something wanted way more than we could afford to pay.

That link was interesting reading. Thank you. Now off to do some research on Tolex.

J Miller 10-03-2012 11:16 AM

That is so awesome!

pocoellie 08-29-2013 06:34 AM

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a great refurbishing you did!!!!!!!! The case and the machine look brand new.

SteveH 08-29-2013 07:39 AM

detail of the website comment regarding the material "Tolex"

"I used a tough, synthetic covering called "Tolex", which is used to cover Rock band amplifiers, speakers, and just about every musical instrument case in existence from Rock guitars to French Horns. Its usually plain black, but I was able to purchase this red/black Python-skin look stuff from a speaker supply house."

This is making me feel bad. Members are bringing back my old threads where I actually accomplished things. I've not gotten anything done since last year.

Steve, checking your Tolex site out. I "think" I may have had it on my other HD, but lost it.

To use a California phrase "Dude, Chillax." You rock, we all know it!

ALL craftsman who produce for the long haul, have cycles of productivity and cycles of recharge... I find that after periods of inactivity is when I do some of my best work.

J Miller 08-29-2013 10:23 AM

OK then, looks like I'm gonna really be productive in a bit ...... I hope.

My wife found two rolls of pre-glued wall paper and we were thinking of covering one of the machine cases with it.
My concern is does it have enough glue on it to really stick to bare wood.

Joe, can you please post a link to your tutorial. I'm on a mobile device and don't navigate as well with it. Thanks
Jim in Springfield OR

J Miller 08-30-2013 03:57 PM

Jim,

On the first page of this thread in the first post is a link to my other thread. I've only done two.
OK, here it is: { http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...r-t199606.html }

I was going to do a third, but the pics were lost. I've got a case out in the garage that's ready for covering, when I get to feeling better and can find some brush on glue I'll make some more pics and do another one.
