Went to some local thrift stores in my area yesterday and look what I found for 47.95 and in the cabinet too. Don't have to tell you this baby came home with me and is going to get a good cleaning and oiling today. She is set up next to my 201 and they are getting along great. I tried her at the store and she just purred along so beautifully. Cant wait to try the fancy stitches. Want them for applique as it seems no matter what new machine I use for them, I don't like the look of them or the sound the machine.

Is it a 401 ? Can't believe the deal you got

Bobbinchick 05-14-2011 07:26 AM

Looks just like the machine my mother had years ago back in the late 1950's. Now my youngest sister has it and it still works and has all the cams to do them fancy decorative stitches. HAve a great day and enjoy. Huggies, Fay

Congratulations, ......awesome purchase.
You're going to love her very dearly, the cabinet is awesome.
Have you checked to see if there's a knee lever on the cabinet, look underneath your left side of the cabinet.

Nettie Phillips 05-14-2011 05:33 PM

Looks like the one my mother had and I didn't feel I needed
another one so my sister took it for granddaughter. My mother
got years of good service with it as she sewed for other people
for years. It is still running good. Congrats.

Candace 05-14-2011 07:36 PM

Can't beat these old, trusty machines.

wolph33 05-14-2011 07:37 PM

great old machine,lucky you.enjoy

cherrybsixty 05-14-2011 08:34 PM

I still use the 401A that my Mom bought brand in 63. I've been sewing on it since I was 14 or 15 years old. I just take into the OSMG every year and she just keeps on ticking. Wish I knew how to use the buttonhole attachment, it still work also, if I knew how to use it.

JulieTN 05-14-2011 08:41 PM

Next time you shop, can I go with you!?? Those older machines that work are like the industrial workhorses of sewing. You can not break them! Congratualtions on your new machine, and on being at the right place, at the right time.

Now SEW!
LOL
Julie

Congrats, very pretty machine, did it come with all the cams,
thats what I have a hard time finding when I find them at thrift
shops. :-D

gzuslivz 05-14-2011 08:52 PM

That's my Mom's machine!! I learned to sew on it. She was given a computerized machine (Elna I think) and after trying it, gave it to my sister and went back to her Singer.

JulieTN 05-14-2011 08:55 PM

Cherryb - look on google.search for a manual for your machine. They are urally floating around out there. I found one for a machine I thought would never get one for. Good luck.

Julie

I have one just like it, and I love it! It's a real work horse, for sure.

Yooper32 05-15-2011 03:53 AM

I'd give my eye-teeth for that cabinet, let alone the machine. You won the jack-pot for sure.

cherylrom 05-15-2011 03:54 AM

Oh does this bring back memories. This is the exact machine I learned to sew on at 12 years old. I would love to have my mom's machine - just for old times sake. You are one lucky lady!

doglover 05-15-2011 04:06 AM

You are right, nothing beats the sound of an old Singer buzzing along.

damaquilts 05-15-2011 04:14 AM

These are wonderful machines. I have a 401,403 and a 503 . I cleaned up a friends 500 and fell in love with that. She rarely sews, lost the controller I gave her another, I told her she didn't deserve it and I was going to take it home with me. lol All mine need some cleanup work for something or other but they still run fine.

Stitchnripper 05-15-2011 04:17 AM

Happy day! Enjoy it.

keesha_ont 05-15-2011 04:22 AM

My mother bought that machine when she arrived in Canada from Holland in the early 50's. It runs still like a dream and has many many hours on it as she made clothes for 8 children and then I used it to make clothes as a teenager. Its coming to me one day and I can't wait.

lovelyl 05-15-2011 05:15 AM

I AM SO JEALOUS! I have been looking for a 401 for several months... Love her for me, too!
