I Am My Brother's Keeper

5 Attachment(s)
I found this in my father's basement.
I didn't think to have it "properly restored."
I just had it cleaned and repaired.
The case was totally rotted. No hope of repair.
I have no idea what the model or year is.

It sews a nifty straight stitch. At top speed, it's a ripsnorter.
there's a dial on top to set the foot pressure for several different types of fabric.

I don't know how often I'll use it.
For one thing, it weighs a ton!
it's much too heavy for the new, plastic case.
i'll have to figure out a way to reinforce that so the machine sits level.

For another, it still stinks to high heaven.
Gotta get some odor eaters for it. LOL

Up North 12-10-2012 03:35 PM

What aprety Machine hoe you can use it!

Glenda m 12-10-2012 05:02 PM

It looks great. Hope you can get it up and running.

barny 12-10-2012 05:04 PM

It may be heavy, but Ohhh, it is pretty.

J Miller 12-10-2012 06:49 PM

Heavy machines work better. They don't skitter all over the table when you use them.

Patrice -

That is a beautiful pink machine. The faceplate is also a nice touch - it has that industrial, robot look. I hope you enjoy it.

auntpiggylpn 12-10-2012 07:01 PM

Candace 12-10-2012 07:08 PM

cathyvv 12-10-2012 07:19 PM

pocoellie 12-10-2012 07:26 PM

What a great looking machine.

vanginney 12-10-2012 07:48 PM

I love the color! And that it was in your family makes it extra special!

quiltjoey 12-10-2012 07:55 PM

That is a beauty! Was it your Mom's and did your Dad keep it because it was her? It must have been special for him to have kept a long time!
I love vintage machines. I didn't know the "Brother" machines had been around very long. I hope you keep and enjoy your "find"...

sharon b 12-10-2012 08:00 PM

She sure is Pretty in Pink :) Maybe set her out in the sun/heat to air her out ? I knew cases held an odor- didn't know machines would since they are metal hhhhhmmmmmm

Welcome to the Vintage family :D

mighty 12-10-2012 08:44 PM

What a beautiful machine!!!!!

audsgirl 12-10-2012 11:35 PM

This would be pretty just as decoration. The fact that it stitches well is so much gravy. Neat find!

patricej 12-11-2012 03:58 AM

having missed it completely the first 72 times i looked, i just noticed the model number printed inside the throat.
on the 75th go-round, i found the serial number.
no luck so far locating a source for a manual.

it's a pink & (beige?/tan?) colored Model 220 Super Streamliner.
there's one on ebay for - get this - $239.95, plus shipping.
it has the original case and foot pedal, but ... really? $300 by the time you factor in shipping?
puleeze ... as if ... whatever. LOL

curiosity got the better of me so i went hunting through my jumble of miscellaneous extra feet and gadgets.
i found a few vintage feet that fit; some specialty feet; and an adapter for snap-on feet.
i have more than a dozen of the metal bobbins, plus an extra bobbin case.
(the bobbin winder is a pain in the butt to use so far. no manual, so i can't tell whether it's the winder or the user. LOL)

i suppose it would be cool to find the correct foot pedal and case, but i don't plan to try selling it so i don't suppose that matters over-much.

the plastic carrying case is good enough for hauling it from one place to another.
it isn't sturdy enough to handle the weight of the machine so it sits flush like it should.
so, more important, i think to eventually find a nice little table or cabinet for it - on wheels - so i can take it into the living room if i want to use it while watching the boob-tube.
i don't know whether any members of my guild are vintage collectors.
if any are, i guess i'll take it to a meeting to show it off.

for now, it's a significant hassle to drag it out for use.
i'll do that every so often to keep it from freezing up again.
and to fiddle with the bobbin winder until i figure out how to tame it. LOL

abdconsultant 12-11-2012 04:14 AM

Great machine, find a sturdy table to put it in and use it.

nanna-up-north 12-11-2012 04:41 AM

Oh, she's sew pretty!! and, she looks sew nice and clean. You're going to enjoy her sew much!!! I think it's really cool to sew on a family machine.

Jingle 12-11-2012 05:26 AM

It sure is pretty. I have one from the 50s that was never used. I have pieced several quilts on it but, it isn't as nice as the newer machines to use. I hope you can get the bobbin winder going.

MamaBear61 12-11-2012 05:36 AM

Patrice your brother sure is PURDY! I simply love the colour :-)

Caroline S 12-11-2012 05:39 AM

PINK!!! What a find. What is the problem with the bobbin winder???

Tink's Mom 12-11-2012 05:49 AM

Hi Patrice...when you close it up, try leaving a box of the refridgerator baking soda in it...it is a screened box so that if it spills....it isn't all over. That may help with the odor.

The Brother is pretty much a universal machine....they are all pretty much the same with a different face plate...
You may be able to find an old book from other brands that look alike.

Try a wooden shim to level that machine out....it worked on an old machine I used to have.

miriam 12-11-2012 06:10 AM

I LOVE your BROTHER!!! I just fixed one up and sold it I would call that a lavender or mauve depending on how the light hits it. The one I had was in pristine condition and these days, that scares me - I was right the tension spring was not in the right place so the poor machine wouldn't sew. Does the bobbin winder tire not turn - some times one will 'freeze' - put a little Triflow oil on the hole between the spindle and the tire and finger turn it until is loosens up. It is very heavy - it will fit in the same cabinet some Singer machines fit. The one I had was a neat little machine. Feel free to put a picture of yours here: http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...s-t207877.html

MimiBug123 12-11-2012 08:50 AM

Just beautiful! I love pink sewing machines.

chris_quilts 12-11-2012 01:08 PM

Patrice, I love the machine and the color. Lucky girl to have such a machine and from your dad, too.
Chris

oldtnquiltinglady 12-11-2012 01:19 PM

Patrice, one of my sisters is an antiques finder/collector, and her secret to the "stink" is lots of time, and lots of newspapers (she says the ink will absorb the smell) and I guess it works. I collect sewing machines, and like you say, they can sometimes smell bad (but I was mostly aware of the cabinets and carrying cases). One of the ladies mentioned outside in the sun and air for a few days and that might work, but I can't tell where you are located. It might be too cold or wet to leave it outside for any extended amount of time. Anyway, I agree with you about the Brother--I have one that looks a lot like it and I can remember it being a good sewer. Good luck, keep us posted.

J Carol 12-12-2012 04:23 AM

You might try some bounce sheets in the carrying case or just sit on a porch that is enclosed so it is protected.:) What a beauty.

janegb 12-12-2012 05:32 AM

I LOVE these old Brother Machines. Have 3 or 4 of them. Real Workhorses, and pretty too! Have fun with her. Hope you can get the smell out without too much trouble. I've gotten some from Smokers, and Phewwww! But they do clean up alright.

patricej 12-13-2012 02:58 AM

i think the "tire" on the bobbin winder does not engage completely with the bigger wheel.
does that description make sense at all?

miriam 12-13-2012 03:44 AM

I could swear they changed the size of the replacement tires to a tad small. Yes you are making sense. I don't know if sew-classic or one of the other on line places would have bigger tires or not.

J Miller 12-13-2012 04:40 AM

PatriceJ,

Sew-Classic has several sizes of bobbin winding tires. And most bobbin winders are adjustable. Each size Sew-Classic sells has a size diagram with it. So work your old one off and measure it, then compare those measurements to what S-C has and you'll be in business.

patricej 12-13-2012 09:16 AM

i will have to work up the courage to take it off.
i have a tendency to make things worse when i start taking things apart.
that's why i took it to the shop. LOL

if it has a keyboard, i can usually bully it into submission.
otherwise ... not so much. LOL

i don't suppose anybody can point me toward a source for the correct foot pedal?
case?
neither is crictical.
just "nice-to-have".

miriam 12-13-2012 12:00 PM

Try sew-classic - she has lots of goodies.

Donna 66 12-13-2012 12:10 PM

It looks a lot like (except the color) the Brother that my MIL gave me right after we were married (1969). I have had several machines since then, but keep it out at the lake and sew with it in the summer. It also does a great stitch and weighs a ton. It didn't come with an instruction booklet or a case, which was frustrating to me as a fairly young sewer. I gave it to my mom for awhile, and then when she died, I took it back (much to the disappointment of my niece). I just explained that it was a gift that meant a lot to me, as DH's mother died a couple years after we married.

Enjoy it!

Donna
