I'm finished fixing the cabinet to the Singer 9W-7 my SIL gave me last July. The one that somebody used as an aquarium stand.
I'm following the instructions in Glenn's tutorial on refinishing sewing machine cabinets and am down to the point where I need to put the paste wax on. I want to do this before I reassemble the top wood pieces so I can get the wax under all the pieces.
But .... Skip recommends Briwax Paste Wax in the dark color and I can't find any in Springfield. I've tried every hardware store, Lowes, Menards, several furniture and wood places, three different antique stores, and NOT ONE stocks it.

I'm tempted to put it back together as it is.

I hate this miserable place, you can't find anything you need. It looks like I'll have to order it in via the internet. What a pain in the ......... sit down part.

Sorry about the rant. I just wanted to show my finished project and I'm getting ancy about it.

Joe don't fret any briwax will do can you find clear. There are other antique waxes you can use such as Howard in dark. Call the antique stores to see what kind of antique paste wax they carry. Anyone will work but briwax will give you the most band for your buck. These waxes have a lot of beeswax in them so they protect from moisture better.

After putting on two coats of the amber shellac to help the repairs match the old parts better, I think the dark will make them match even better.
One place said they have one can of the clear. I'll have to ask my wife who they were, she did all the phone calling.

We have some of the Howard's but it's also clear. And when the places we called didn't have the Briwax we asked about Howard's and they didn't have that either. About all you can find around here is the spray stuff made by Pledge and we don't want that.

We did find that we can order it through Ace and get it delivered directly to the local store. So I suspect that is what we'll have to do.

As for water protection, as long as I own that there will be a permanent moratorium on any water near it. I did a lot of work fixing on that thing. Makes me tired just thinking about it.

I can't understand why you can't find briwax there. It is in all the antique stores here. Oh well. Those cabinets can be a lot of work and then some.

I don't understand it either. I know that O'Reily Auto Parts carry Briwax, but it's the automotive stuff. Why the local hardware and antique stores don't carry it when those in your area do is one on me.

I don' understand your area and Charlee's is large enough to have in the antique stores. It is everywhere here in the south. If that one antique store has the clear then they can get the dark for you Joe. If us hillbillies can get you guys should be able to.LOL

As for BriWax? Nada...around here the antique stores carry Howard's...

The Howards in dark will be fine I use it when I don't have any briwax on hand. Take it slow Charlee and glad you are better.

Thank you for reminding us about Amazon. The price there with shipping would save about $3.00. Every dollar saved is a dollar we can spend somewhere else. :)
Besides there is some things still in the wish list that would be nice to get too.

I pay $13.00 to $15.00 for a can of briwax here in my area. One can will last you a very long time. You need to apply the wax very thin let dry for a few minutes and buff to a shine.

PS What is the cost at amazon?

I have a silly question, since I am not familiar with wood wax. How do you choose the color? Is it best to go with the clear, or best to match it to the cabinet? But, then clear wood work for any color wood, light or dark, correct?

The clear will work on any wood. I use the dark to cover and enhance the old patina and to hide scratches. Don't worry if the can says dark walnut or dark mahogony just as long as it is dark. Dark is the key not the name of the color you will not be able to see any diff between them.
