look a lot like a 70's Sears Kenmore machine made in Japan. Should be quite sturdy. What a very nice find.

Remove the top, open the front, tilt it back on it's hinges and oil everything that moves or should move with Tri-FLow oil. Clean as you go. No idea what the brand is but J-A 1 is Brother. Not sure what the "G" indicates though the chart doesn't show it.
Spool pins, belts, feet, and other things can be had at Sew-Classic. Joe |
Yes, I don't really care about a brand either, but I don't have a manual or instructions so that makes me feel a little uneasy. I can't complain really. The tension assembly is out of whack, I am pretty sure. I have it turned all the way to the left as far as it will go, and it is still tight. On the underneath of the fabric, it looks like a straight line of thread.
I don't think I have the patience and knowledge for this.

You can clean it yourself and buy a lightbulb after you remove the old one to see which type it is. Spool pin - sew-classic.com or make one with a wooden skewer. Slow - remove the cover to the foot controller and vacuum the dust out and clean the contacts. Both my MW machines are marked as such, but it doesn't matter who made it - just how well it sews and I bet this will be a good one.

I appreciate your tips. I am just having a fit with the tension. I wanted to get this running smoothly so that we could gift it to a friend's daughter. She has a two year old, and I think down the road she will want to sew. But since I don't know if she will really develop the interest, I can't see investing too much. The cabinet looks ok, and has little drawers which would be nice for her.

I was hoping it would be a Kenmore. I have a Kenmore that I have had for years...many...many. And it is just a joy. This one is giving me fits with the tension, and I guess I just give up too easily.

If it s a kenmore it would have it on the machine , its a japan made machine after you get it all oiled up give it a going over clean the tension diskd to loosen them up put a new needle in and get a cup of joe and,get busy the machine looks good hope you get it going ,does the girl sew at all

Yes, it does sew. And the local sewing machine dealer got the tension a little better for me. She put on a little plastic spool pin on it for me too. Now I have to figure out what is wrong with the bobbin loading incorrectly. It's hard without a manual and nowhere online to even check it out. |

Thanks...I did look at some of the links but must have missed the Model 302. I did check out some of the images at one site but didn't see any with the sew darn buttons on the front panel. Most had the sew darn on the flat part of the base.

Most likely someone used 3-in-1 oil on it at some point and the inerds are all gummed up. A good cleaning inside should get it moving faster.
