Jones Hand Machine

Decided to finally start posting some of my vintage collection. This is a Jones Hand Machine, as it says on the machine itself. I cleaned the surface with sewing machine oil and was dismayed to see gold flecks come off when I was lightly wiping the oil off. I am sorta afraid to touch it.
Though I haven't located the serial number I believe this to be about a 1891 version since it has the brass badge stamped 'As supplied to H.R.H. The Princess of Wales'. It seems to be very sturdy and my grandkids love to turn its handle. I don't know what type of needles it takes nor have I sewn on it yet. I love it style. Photos #6 & #7 show the take lever for the presser foot. It works really well. |
Wow! I havenever seen one like that.....so beautiful.

Wowwww, I've never seen a machine that style in real life

Never seen one like that, almost doesn't look like a sewing machine!

Can you imagine how happy some lady was years ago? No more tedious hand sewing those long seams but what a job it must have been (compared to the machines of later years) to turn the crank and handle the large pieces of material (it wasn't called fabric back some years ago, remember?). But what fun it would be to make small items with this little gem. Thanks for showing and telling us about her.

Yes, blueheavenfla, I 'do remember' when fabric was called material AND when it was $2 to $3 for good material.
DH and I saw a movie once about two English clothing designers who were using this machine on the show and your thoughts are what I thought also. Some on the board here do sew lots with handcranks but i haven't so far. If you notice, there is a groove in the wheel which I imagine means it could be set up to treadle also. As the saying goes, 'we've come a long way baby'!!!!:D |
What a neat machine, love the curves....

This is such an incredible find! You must have an eye for the unusual Linda!
It was really bringing a smile to my face to picture the Princess of Wales sewing on one. Do you think she turned her own crank? LOL! :D |
