Lavender Necchi

I was at an antique mall yesterday. I discovered a Necchi model 554, lavender in color. the price was just shy of $100. too rich for me but I couldn't let it out of my mind. there was a sale this weekend soooo I bought it. while waiting for the SM to be brought up front, I made a comment that here I was buying it and had not seen it run. no problem they said, there is an outlet right there. so I plugged it in. hmmmm could not get the motor to engage and run the machine. it would hand turn, but not run off the motor. the motor just hummed along quietly. thinking there was a knob a button or lever that needed to be engaged or not, I read the manual. NADA. still a nice hum but no movement. the lady at the desk came with a can of WD40 and was going to spray and I stopped her. Whew! I took off the top (this had been opened befor due to missing one screw and fresh oil applied) and could not see anything that was interfering, or broken. the motor is encased and I did not have my tools with.
I did get my money back. she came down to half price but I was worried it would be too expensive to repair. I came home and researched it and cannot find one like it. looks like it was one of the last models made in Italy before they started making them in Japan. any ideas what it could be? the motor ran... it did not engage the needle bar to move. but if I hand turned the wheel, the needle bar went up and down. |
I wonder if the belt is slipping? It's a gorgeous machine. I love the color!

If the motor ran and was turning the pulley, and the machine operated by turning the hand wheel, then either the belt was slipping, or their was no belt.
I would have tried to talk the price down further. That one has the cut-out in the bed for a treadle belt, so you could have at least used it that way. |
Sadly, she probably sprayed it with wd-40 once you left:< It could be several things-a belt issue, something stuck in the bobbin assembly, or simply needing to be lubed and oiled.

So, I'm guessing you could have brought it home for less than $50? My husband would have sided with you - I'd have brought it home anyway. But then I have a hankering for a pink one, and this one is even prettier. I see enough green ones I'd have gotten this and bought an ugly green one if needed to get the lavender one working. But I am crazy . . .

It's a gorgeous color.Wow.

Pretty machine! You're just going to have to open it up and see what's going on. I'm guessing it'll be an easy fix like a new belt.

What a great color! The go to guys say a belt so get back there.

Did you say lavender? Under $50? Please tell me that you went back and bought it. There can't be too much wrong with it and you'd be saving it from bombardments of WD40. Now, get yer rear in gear and go get that machine!

Cindy you made me LOL. This Necchi is an hours drive away. I do not know if it is still there. I called today (cannot get this machine out of my head) and they cannot locate it. the lady I talked too on saturday is gone for the week. hmmmm I may have to drive down there and see for myself. I am kicking myself for not taking it on saturday.
