Looking for motor for 401G

Have a Singer 401G that seems to be complete except for the motor. It was in the storage unit I bought, and I think someone removed it. Hope someone on the board can help me find one. Thank, Bobbie

Hi Grannysewer, you may find that your machine never had a motor. Take the lid off (2 screws on the top of the machine) and see if there is a nylon gear wheel attached to the balance wheel. If there is no nylon gear wheel then you have a treadle machine and will need both a motor and a replacement balance wheel complete with gear. I have been looking for a treadle balance wheel for my machine for some time so if yours has a treadle balance wheel I would happily supply you with an electric balance wheel in exchange for your balance wheel. Let me know what you find! All the best, Mark, NZ

Yeah, but mine is 401G and has the bobbin winder on the top. It takes a different motor. Thanks anyway, Bobbie

This is for the 411G but it will show how the 401G is set up in a treadle and how to chain stitch the 401G - they do that too!

Someone I know used a 2mm diameter polycord belt from a spinning supply store to drive it with no shredding. She said she ordered the longest piece she could so she would have a spare. http://www.spinnerschoice.com/Spinni...s/default.html (where she found it - scroll down) If you set it too tight remember it won't stretch.

To do it without trying to grind something off the existing balance wheel we put in a bushing, 7/8” inch interior diameter, 1/16” thick, metal will work - goes way inside by the shaft. Then we pulled the motor - too much friction with it in. You may not have a bobbin winder - the wheel on it may not be big enough to still hit the wheel.

Here is a picture of my 401G - right now it has a leather belt - it rubs on the metal and shreds - the smaller spinning wheel belt will clear that and run just fine.

Thanks Miriam for the pics. I have some belts in that stuff I got, now just to find a treadle. This just blows my mind that this machine can be treadled. I downloaded the ismacs file for it and can't believe how much it is like the rocketeer. Thank you again so much.

The Singer 401G and the Singer 500 are a lot alike inside.

I would hold out for a spinning wheel belt but why not try it with the existing belt if it fits. A leather shoe lace might work in that slot. I figured out the shim is worth the efforts. I am not going to do mine up until we move - I don't know when that will be but it will be coming up.
