My 1902 Hand Crank

Here is the photos of the Singer 1902 Hand Crank that I have been working on. Sure wish she had been finished before the power outage. After a lot of Triflow everything moves smoothly. She has over a hundred years of built up oil varnish that I am slowly removing. Maybe that is what preserved her, the oil and all the dirt and cobwebs. The has a coffin top that needs refurbishing also. It is in three pieces but I love her anyway.
I do need a presser foot for her, hers is bent, can't figure out how that happened. Also I need a bobbin winder ring. Any suggestions where I can get those items? How do you remove the back cover plate and the round bobbin plate's screw is frozen, it won't turn? I don't want to do anything that will damage those pieces. The cover plates over the shuttle are very rough. Is it possible to have them replated? I do have reproductions but I sure would like to restore the originals. |

The first two pictures should be of the presser foot that appears, to me, to be bent. The third is of the bobbin plates that are really in rough shape. I just discovered that the repro plates I have are for a Model 27 and do not fit, they are longer. According to the ISMACS site, the machine is a Model 28. I guess that is another reason to have too many machines (not!) you never know when you will need parts. Thanks Jacquie |
Caroline, yes. You can have the parts re-plated. You're doing an awesome job with this machine!! Wonder how the presser foot got bent? Seems strange! LOL

have you tried navel jelly on the plates? as for the foot, I will take a look at the ones I have out there..BUT, a handy man can reshape that foot with an anvil and hammer!

I'm thinking someone tried to pry a lid off a container? Or used the foot to pry some other part off the machine? You never know. Glad you are undertaking the R&R (rescue and revival). Hope all goes well.

Awesome! Don't you love the 'clickety click' sound it makes when you turn the crank?
I'm posting a few pics to show you how wonderful Maas metal polish works in cleaning up the yellowish coloring on the fancy parts. My New Home sewing machine has a needle plate like yours....rough and dull.... and the Maas did not work for that but I've heard good things about Bartender's Friend. I'll let you know how I make out with that. It's good to know that they can be re-plated, even though I wouldn't know how to go about doing that. Anybody know?? |

Thanks Cathy. I do have both Maas and Bartenders Friend in my cleaning kit. Will try them tonight. And I will check out the link you provided for the bobbin winder tire.

Well I am taking the big plunge of a full dismantle and cleaning. I decided that the Hand Crank needs the "Billy Treatment". She has 110 years of accumulated gunk top and bottom. I got really brave and removed the bobbin winder and it is now soaking in kerosene ala Billy along with the bobbin plates and face plate. I was able to finally remove the round bobbin plate after liberally dripping kerosene around the screw. The back plate I removed by covering the end of a large screwdriver with a rag and tapping it on the edge with my leather mallet. The pictures will show you why this girl needs a Billy bath. FYI I decided that I am going to give her the name of Hannah Handcrank.

That foot can be fixed by a good blacksmith or someone used to working with metal - I would not hit that cold with a hammer on an anvil it could shatter - then they can tell you how to get it smooth enough to use - some old feet aren't chromed

Cute, cute machine. I have to second the Barkeeper's friend, that and a small brush (like a stiff toothbrush) to get in all the nooks and crannies. You will be amazed at the difference a shiny bobbin winder and plates make.

ALL of the varnish does not HAVE to come off - that old dried up oil varnish is a protective coat - keeps it from rusting - just clean the MOVING nooks and crannies and get lint and dust out - There are some small brushes in the tooth brush section of the stores or an eye lash brush will really get in the cracks - taking the bobbin winder off is a good way to clean without damaging the machine's paint. Not everything needs to be dis-assembled or perfectly clean though - Triflow oil is really helpful to get things moving...

That is one of the prettiest faceplates I have ever seen, and never saw this particular one before. Great job you are doing. I don't think too many people would tackle one in that bad a shape. 'Course, Charlee would too.

Update On The Cleaning Process

I am slowly working on Hannah Hand Crank. The bobbin assembly is soaking in kerosene with the faceplate and bobbin plates. I am going to have the bobbin plates replated. Every other day or so I will do a little more gentle cleaning on the decals with Goop and a wipe of kerosene. When I began some of the decals were invisible, now I am seeing gold.:D

I looked all over our town/s, couldn't find it anywhere. Dh and I went to some antique stores over the weekend and each one of them carried all the Maas products (quiet testimonial for the product, don't you think?) best, d |
