My new project: New Home mdl ?????
 

Yesterday I drove down to a tiny little burg called Modesto and picked up a New Home machine that was advertised on Craigs List. Paid all of $15.00 for it. He was asking $25.00.

Got a good look at it and it's mostly there, only missing one piece on the machine, the stitch length control nob, and the latches on the case.

The machine has it all plus extras.
It was locked up
Rust
Dirt
Bad wiring to a motor that won't run
A rotted rubber belt
Age dried and pealing veneer on the case
Missing latches

~and~

A big mouse nest under the machine in the case bottom. No mice though.

The wad of pins and needles must have been the doings of the same 2 yo that drew the circles on the case. They also put pins down the oil holes at the needle end of the machine and that is what locked the machine up tight. The minute I cleared them out it rotates easily.

This model was no doubt available as a treadle but this specific machine is an original electric machine. The motor and foot controller is the same ones that my New Home Greyhound has.

The machine came with a bobbin and shuttle and a humongous needle marked "NEW HOME 1/2". Thankfully I do have some 20x1s I've bought for my other New Home.

I've got the machine oiled up and the needle parts off and being cleaned. It won't be hard at all to get it back in sewing condition.
However diagnosing the dead motor is going to be fun. It and the foot controller is still wired with ancient cloth covered wire and cloth tape. Somewhere in the machines long life someone altered the wiring. My guess is the original wiring rotted away and the connectors were damaged. So along comes some ingenious fellow and alters the works.
I may simply rewire it with good wire using the existing connectors, then again I might return it to something closer to original. I do have the other New Home to use as a pattern.

Oh, I've also decided to name the machine "Minie" as in Minie mouse. Um for obvious reasons.

Now I just need a lead on where to go to figure out what the model # and/or name is to it.
The only markings I've found are on the front slide plate and the machined area under it: AB 5043 on the plate, 5043 under the plate.
Can someone direct me to the info I need?

Sorry no help on the info you seek, but wow an actual pinion (spur) gear drive. Might have to get out the old "white lead" and check the back lash on that system!

WOW! That is one big challenge! Can't wait to see it all fixed up!

Really, really glad the mice had vacated!!

I've got the machine itself back together and sewing. There is no mechanical damage to the machine, just the surface.
Next I get started on the motor and wiring.

As far as the mice go, my wife is afraid they might be in the Pathfinder. We didnt' find the nest till we stopped for a bite to eat on the way back.
I told her if there is one in there and it runs up my pant leg ..... things ARE going to get exciting.

That's what you need for starting on the New Home. My grandmother had the treadle version of this machine. I remember sewing on it back in the 60s. Mice get into everything when winter arrives. Glad they are gone now.

Did he charge extra for the 'mouses?' Hope Minnie has a full recovery.

Hi Joe, I have one that looks just like yours . (without the mice nest) . You have to call the Janome Co. And give them your numbers and they will tell you the year and where it was made. Mine was made in 1926 in Orange, Mass.
I think that was the last year that they was made in Orange. after that they moved, I think to Chicago. You can find out about the New home Sewing machine Co. online. Have fun with that one. Gloria

Try contacting New Home which I believe now is Janome they are located in New Jersey. The other thing is to check out a local Janome dealer they might be able to help. But I would suggest taking some pictures of machine write down the model & serial number so that your not taking the machine.

I have no idea what model this is. All I have is the serial number. I does have "Orange, Mass" cast into the underside of the bed though.

I do have a Janome dealer near by, I'll give him a call or the Janome company.

looks like a big project. But she looks like she'll clean up nice. now you need a Micky to go with her and have all sorts of little mice!!! :D

Well, I don't know about a lot of little mice, but it wouldn't bother me if they got together and made some little baby machines I could sell.

As of now, I've gotten the machine together and test sewed with it, turning the machine by hand. Works smooth and easy.
I've checked and verified the motor is good internally. Just needs re-wired.
And I've checked and found the foot controller is also good. The wires were bad. Not surprising considering their age.

I'm going to rewire it all but I haven't decided just how to make the connectors yet.
Either I'll put in a wire block like the Japanese machines have, that's the easiest way, or I'll wire in a 3 way connector set like it most likely was originally.

Yes I do. But it's not going to be anything I can't handle. I've already got the machine sewing, by hand anyway. I'm working on the motor and foot controller, so ... it's doable.

How is Minnie doing? I was lying in bed contemplating sleep, when I thought about Minnie. I said a little prayer that you have a smooth passage with the remodel. This is a very old machine and you have your work cut out for you. Be sure to post when you finish. This will be a great transformation indeed. Can't wait to see.

I think mice are cute BUT- a treadle machine brought hitchhikers that moved into my car's AC/heating system. Over $200 to get the ductwork cleaned- and the smell was awful. No machine comes near my car til I've emptied all the drawers into a box.

I'm in complete agreement with you. We just never dreamed there would be a nest in the case. And we didn't think to look till after we'd left the storage locker where the machine had been stored.
Lesson learned. The odor from the machine was not fresh so I'm "hoping" there were no mice there.
If there are any mice in my Pathfinder one of my cats will spend the night in it.
