Need help trying to fit my 301 into a Singer treadle cabinet #5/#6
 

I'm trying to find a way to fit my 301 into my treadle cabinet. The back of the machine does fit into the clips and a tray for the 301. Now when lowering the machine back down onto the cabinet, the front part of the cabinet (the separate piece that raises up and down to lower the machine into the cabinet) has a long wooden 'stopper' to lean the machine on which is actually in the way. It looks like I would have to get a saw out and cut that part off the cabinet I'm really afraid to do that without checking here to see if someone else has adapted their treadle cabinet. Is there a template that I can find to help guide the process of cutting into the cabinet?

I believe this is a #5/#6 treadle cabinet. I've attached pics of the cabinet but can take more pics if more explaination is needed.

If you can advise it would be much appreciated.

Tables the fit 301's are very common and had for only a few dollars. I wouldn't cut into that one and it looks like you would have to. I see these tables listed all the time on CL and have picked up a few free...

I agree with Candace, don't cut into the treadle cabinet. It's easy enough to find one that will fit or, in the meantime, use it as a portable on top of this cabinet.
PS: I have a treadle cabinet exactly like yours.

I'm rebuilding one exactly like that. Oh that is sooooo purty. I got an e-machine cabinet I believe would fit your 301 without needing the saw. And if if did need the saw it wouldn't be ruining an old treadle cabinet.

Thanks for your ideas. I may just go ahead and use it on top of the cabinet. Hate the idea of cutting into a beautiful cabinet like that....what model would fit into this treadle...but electric, not treadle?

Any standard based sewing machine, Singer and otherwise will fit it. Singer 66, 15, HA-1/15 clone, and anything with a base sized like that will fit it.

Very pretty cabinet.....as for me, I could not possibly saw into it, lol.

You'll need the two front brackets for the 301 cradle to hook into. I had a similar cabinet, although not for a treadle, and did cut off the front lip. I replaced it with 2 metal brackets that came with my 301 cradle. Many cradles are available on E-bay, but you need one with ALL the mounting hardware to retro-fit into another cabinet. I only planned on using my cabinet (a thrift store find) for my 301's, so I didn't mind cutting off the lip with a sabre saw.

Whatever you do, do NOT cut that beautiful cabinet. I did that when I was young and I threw away the head too. Now that I am older and wiser, of course, I regret cutting up the cabinet to fit another Singer machine into. I still have the treadle cabinet, but it's in sad state. I have gotten two more 'old' cabinets, but none as pretty as the treadle once was.

I know...I'm not a carpenter and neither is my DH so I'm probably not going to cut into it. Maybe one day when I have a few extra $$ and the space I may be interested in a cabinet for it, but for now it's one of my two portables for quilting classes and workshops. I have a rolling cart so no problem with transportation. Thanks everyone for your ideas.
