Pink Morse Duomatic TZ 50, Picture Heavy

Well my OJCG (old junk collector guy) did it again. He found this Morse sewing machine and it is . . I did not know Morse machines came in pink. Doing a major happy dance here. She must have sat in a damp garage, in sunlight because her paint is faded on top and back. The hand wheel only turned about 1/2 a revolution and the wiring is shot, shot and more shot. So I pulled removed the top and liberally soaked every piece that looked like it would revolve. Turned her on her side and oiled the innards. I then removed the bobbin covers, removed the rusted bobbin case, loosened shuttle case thingy (you know what I mean) and oiled till she was dripping. Did the same with the knob mechanism that raises and lowers the feed dogs. It took about 1/2 hour but everything is now moving and turning.

I was wondering what the porthole was on the top, lifted it up and it takes cams of some sort. Also the spool pins are fold down, a little button is pushed and the pop up, or will when I am done. Now off to do an Internet search for a manual.

Cool machine. Lots of nobs and dials. Looks like a candidate for Evapo-Rust too.

Since the paint is different on these machines perhaps a gentle application of a paste car wax might bring the rear and top back some.

I love pink Morse machines. Mine was posted here http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...20-t53840.html

it was made by Morse and badged a 'Princess'.

Jingle 07-26-2012 05:40 AM

At least the front is still a pretty pink. Good luck with it. I have seen so many different machines on this thread. I didn't know existed or are still being found.

JMCDA 07-26-2012 05:54 AM

ooooo, Caroline she is a pretty girl! My daughter just missed one like this a while back...I didn't think she really wanted to go fetch it for me so I didn't pass on the link immediately and then once I mentioned it, and she saw it, she said "you are going to have to fight me for that one Mummy" LOL - sadly it was already gone.

J

and I forgot to add that your machine is pretty much the same as one I have made by Toyota - she came with 14 cams and I do have a manual for it as well if you need me to scan it- the dash board on mine lights up...bet yours does too

I will have to re-wire before seeing if my machine has a dash board that lights up. I do appreciate the offer for the manual. I will PM you. Thank you ever so much. Today I will remove the shuttle race and hook and give it a good soak in Evaporust. Slowly but surely I will bring here back to life.

I love Pink sewing machines!! I like all the knobs, and dials on your machine. Can't wait to see her all cleaned up, she is going to be gorgeous! All shiny, and pink!

Janis 07-26-2012 07:34 AM

She is a neat machine. I'll bet she will be a great one too! I hope you can bring her color back, but if you can't she is pretty anyway!

quilt addict 07-26-2012 10:07 AM

Caroline that is a sweet machine. I really like it and I bet it turns out great with your cleaning and attention. I agree that a car paste wax may remove some of the oxidation on the faded pink. Congrats!

kitsykeel 07-26-2012 01:14 PM

Hi Caroline,

I have a turquoise Morse TZ-5. Very similar to yours. I took the bobbin winder apart when cleaning the machine (I didn't take pictures before) and am having trouble reassembling it. By looking at yours, maybe I can get it back together.

kitsykeel 07-26-2012 01:19 PM

Caroline,

If by chance you take your bobbin winder apart, will you take notes or pictures of how it is assemble so I can figure mine out? I have two washers and a spring that I can't figure where they go. That would be such a big help.

JMCDA 07-26-2012 05:05 PM

Will do...we have had a stormy day here today so will get off the computer until tomorrow.

janegb 07-27-2012 03:21 AM

Good looking machine, looking forward to seeing photos of her after she's all cleaned up. Love that color.

lovelyl 07-27-2012 05:05 AM

WOW! cool machine! Please post pics when she is done!

thepolyparrot 07-27-2012 06:08 AM

How wonderful! Years ago, I passed up a capri blue Morse Fotomatic and honestly, I've regretted it ever since. Glad you jumped on this one! :)

miriam 07-27-2012 08:13 AM

cool machine. evaporust might help. I think I would go to an antique car show with it in my car. Then I would ask around what they use on their cars. You might get some good answers.

I thought I would post pics of the attachments that came in the box. You can see the rusty presser foot, bobbin case and bobbin that I have already removed from the machine which are now soaking in Evaporust. There is also a bobbin case for an older White or Kenmore and assorted other stuff. The one attachment that I am excited about is a hopping foot. That is the first time I have found one in an attachments box.

blueheavenfla 07-27-2012 08:14 PM

I think that you found Cinderella!

Bezzer 07-28-2012 05:04 PM

Month ago I have never even a morse. Bought a 4400 the toady t a garage sale I picked up a 4300 w/ acc. If it stitches like the 4400 I wll be delighted. Will test drive tomorrow. Wore out from heat come 8/11 headed for Washington to cool off.

Morse Refurbish Update

Before and after pics of the Hook & Race assembly. Evaporust is wonderous stuff. It only took me two times to get it back together correctly:thumbup:.

The third pic is of the needle clamp and screw. So far I have not figured out how to remove it for an Evaporust bath. I am thinking that the two hooky things on the left side of the clamp may be the clue. HELP

Bezzer 08-04-2012 03:07 PM

Wonder if is rusted on. Taking the screw out normally gets them off. Maybe a little spray. Evaporust does the trick. I haven't used it yet but I'm sure I eventually will.

Bezzer, if you look at the bottom of the shaft you will see a little lip. That is what is preventing the needle clamp from coming off the bar. I can turn the clamp screw all the way except fully out. I will take a pic of the curly q thingys on the clamp. It sort of looks like they may come out to release the clamp but don't want to force them and break something.

FYI, OSMG says he has the Morse ZZ plates we need. I will be picking them up for sure on Monday.

Morse Needle Clamp

A different view of the needle clamp with the curly q thingys. If I can't remove it I will likely put some Evaporust in a jar and fit it under and up over the needle clamp assembly.

I like the jar idea

Bezzer 08-04-2012 04:17 PM

Hmmm. Good idea. Be interesting to see how that comes apart though. I'll keep looking.

YUP and then getting it back together...

Thinking I will go for the Evapo in the jar first. Will be visiting the OSMG tomorrow and ask him. He might know.

J Miller 08-05-2012 11:27 AM

Dumb question but have you removed the needle clamp screw and then tried to remove the part?

I also like the Evapo-Rust in the jar idea.

The needle clamp screw will not back all the way out. So, the whole thing is now sitting in the Evapo jar. The next adventure is the tension assembly. I should just leave it alone, but can't. What do you think? Should I go for it?

Mummy Quilts 08-05-2012 12:03 PM

Caroline, what an awesome machine! And you're doing such a great job restoring it :)
(sorry, can't help you with your last q. If it were me, I'd GO FOR IT! lol)

Oh, I forgot to mention that I ended up using one of DHs empty bait cups to put the Evaporust in. The glass jars I had would not go under and up over the presser foot assy. But I figured it was my reward for raising maggots for his fishing hobby. Maggots, that is a long story. Mr. Cheapo, AKA DH, didn't want to pay $2.25 for a little cup of maggots but will pay $400 for a new reel. Somehow it does not compute with me. But I go with the flow. It just means I keep things equal by obtaining more vintage sewing machines. :D

Thought you would like to see the presser foot assy sitting in the cup of Evaporust. It is sitting on a old paint stirring stick. I still have to replace the feed dogs and stitch plate after their Evapo treatment.

Hey Caroline - I too have recently acquired a pink beauty Morse just like yours, I realize your post is several years old, hope you are still out there and have some thoughts to share! Mine has no foot control or manual, I just bought a manual online, am hoping it will tell me what kind of foot pedal I need? There is one on Ebay that looks like what I need, it has a box that the two plugs from the machine will plug into? I have started oiling like mad, haven't started on the rust yet, mine is in a little better condition than yours was. Did you get yours running again? Meredith

quilt938 08-21-2015 05:23 PM

pretty!! I keep hoping I'll come across a hot pink morse and a fotomatic one of these days but so far I haven't except on ebay and shipping is so high there sigh...maybe I need to buy some bait LOL!

The two plug in cord with a foot control is what you need. Then you plug the motor into the one for the motor and the light into the one for the light. If you get it wrong or it is wired backwards the motor will run like crazy. I think you can get the rig from sew-classic or other dealers on line.

Thanks Miriam - This is going to be a process for sure, but I love this little pink beauty! I got mine through a Relay for Life garage sale!

Hi. I am hoping to get this pink Duomatic next weekend and I have a few questions.
- have you found cams to work yours and can you show me what they look like? I found some Apollo cams and wondering if they will work in the Duomatic as well. I've attached a photo of the Apollo cams.

Have you found a manual? I did find one that says it is for the Morse 4100 Duomatic Push Button Zig Zag and I'm wondering if they are the same thing. I'm attaching a photo of the metal box of attachments that come with mine and wondering if you can "see" anything in particular in it.

One more question...what kind of bobbins does the Duomatic use?

You have some great pictures and tons of great ideas and advice. From the pics I have seen, I think the one I will be getting is in working order and clean. Crossing fingers as I haven't seen it in person yet. Would love to know how you like sewing on yours now. Thanks.
Peggy

Pegasuscove 10-10-2015 03:19 AM

Never mind about the pic of the cams. I just picked up my Duomatic and it came with a manual so now I know that those are the wrong cams. The manual calls them "Rainbow Discs". I will be on the lookout for some.

Mine appears to be very clean and everything moves...so far. Haven't plugged her in yet, though.
