Ran out of money on the way to the antique show

We went into the city today thinking we'd wander around at the Antique Show that's in town for the weekend, but first I needed to stop and drop off a serger.

This is where I picked up a nice folding table that should be great for cutting, and takes up very little space. Just needed new wheels (cost of less than $3)

Then we went to a moving sale, and I picked up everything that's on the table, $48.

Closer look #1 - $8 for all of the templates and rulers

#2

and #3

301 was seized - 3 in 1 oil. It's marinating right now, but everything's free. Needed the "finger brackets adjusted. $40

The Bernina may be for parts, unfortunately, but at least I got it for free.

caroloto 03-29-2013 10:05 PM

Sucia 03-29-2013 10:26 PM

I think you and your money did just great!

lots2do 03-30-2013 12:42 AM

That table looks a lot sturdier than my Joann's one. Nice job!

sweetpea 03-30-2013 03:32 AM

Who need s the antique show? great finds.

janiesews 03-30-2013 04:07 AM

You got awesome things! Be sure to check around the bobbin area for threads. When I got one of my 301-A's, it had several threads that were caught and keeping it from going properly. Now she sews like a dream. Enjoy your goodies!

Prim Quilts 03-30-2013 05:14 AM

Wow, you hit the jackpot!

J Miller 03-30-2013 05:41 AM

Is that a Bernina 730 and what's wrong with it?

You got a whopper of a bargain at that sale.

Joe

The sewing gods were in your corner yesterday -- that's quite the single trip haul. Enjoy!

Wow, you did great! Have fun with your new toys!

I am going to look up what the moon signs were in when you went out; then I'll be looking for a show of this type. I do LOVE to find awesome deals like this; and so does my husband. You only spent about $100 that whole weekend, huh?????

I think it is. It's got 4 chairs hiding in the middle of it, and the wood trim is actual wood, not pressboard like the ones I see in the fabric store here.

no kidding, eh? I was humming and hawwing as to whether I wanted to go, because it costs $30 for us to just walk in the door. (parking and admission) This was a way better expenditure of money.

This one was surprisingly free of threads. I found one that easily tugged out. The motor pulley was seized. It's the second one I've found seized in a week. Once that started moving, I got oil and grease in all the requisite spots and it was turning perfectly. :) Basically, 10 minutes spent to make sure it works, now comes the cleaning and adjusting.

Good Eye, Joe! Yes, it's a 730. So far here's what I've found:
 • Broken Cam gear - available for about $30, unsure about the labour.
 • Needs a lower belt
 • motor seems sluggish, I put "new" brushes in it to test, and it's fine without load, but any bit of load and it stops.
 • the machine was completely seized up, not a smidge of movement when we got it. Then the handwheel started turning, but nothing else (neither shaft, no play at all), then a little more oil and it started turning... it's hard to rurn right now, tighter than I'd expect a motor to turn it.
 • The needle position mechanism is chipped (the part the user doesn't see), it may be OK, but it may be a problem if it slips once the pin that selects the position unsticks.

The part that makes me crazy is there's one shop in the city I keep hearing about bad tuneups. She took it to them because it was running slowly and not sewing well a couple of years ago. The brushes were nubs. She said when it came back it was still too slow, but it sewed.... its so seized right now, I doubt they did much, barely oiled it, there's practically no residue. This one's going to be a lot of work, and that's IF I can get it going. She was going to take it back to them and give it to them for parts. She said I could have it instead. :) She wanted to buy a new machine that just worked, so I'm going to take a machine I have here that's tuned up and read to go and give it to her, regardless of whether I get this one working or not.

No kidding!! Let me know what they were too? That way I can plan my next outing :)
Total spent yesterday was $51. There's a LOT of elbow grease needed on all of this stuff though.

WoW! You hit the Jack-pot today! Awesome!

tessagin 03-30-2013 08:50 AM

Some things are/not meant to be. Looks like you made out like a fat rat. LOL! Gives me an idea. I know someone wanting to sell their folding table. Need to call them now. Thanks!

Candace 03-30-2013 10:00 AM

Awesome haul. I imagine the 730 had a cracked nylon gear? My 830 came with one. But, these machines are worth the parts and repairing.

Quilt Novice 03-30-2013 10:13 AM

Lucky you!!!!!

J Miller 03-30-2013 12:43 PM

Tammi,

That's too bad about the Bernina. Sounds like some one just beat the stuffings out of it.

Joe

Candace 03-30-2013 01:13 PM

The cam stack gear will cost you $100 plus the part to replace (at least around here that's the price). I did it myself, but it's not an easy fix. The cam gear crack will make it hard to turn.

husker67 03-30-2013 01:42 PM

OMG...what a FIND.

SherriB 03-30-2013 02:01 PM

WOW!!! You got some of the best bargains I have ever seen!!! I am drooling over your table and the long bed 301. I love my 301 and hope to get a long bed someday.

LOL! Yes, a fat rat. I've never heard that before, but it's apt. :)
I love this table. It's a touch short for cutting, but I can fix that. The space is great, and better still that it folds up.

If that was the only problem, I wouldn't worry about it and just change it. The laundry list of things it has wrong with it is what makes me think that it may not be salvageable, but we'll see over the next couple of weeks or so.

I would agree with that statement. I will play for a bit to see if I can convince it to live again, but I'm not sure how hopeful I am at this point.

When I mentioned labor, I should have stated it differently. I do my own labor, it's more I wasn't sure how big a job it was going to be. $100 tells me 1.5 - 2 hours for someone who's done it before. I was thinking the same thing about the gear and the movement. I don't think it was responsible for the complete seizure of the machine though, so I'm going to keep oiling and troubleshooting. If I can get the motor to take a load, I will probably change the belt and the gear.

If I wasn't in the postal equivalent of Mars, I might consider sending it to you. :) The problem is it would cost too much to ship it next door to be worth it.

Enjoy your finds! It is nice to see the old machines going to someone who appreciates them enough to try to nurse them back to health.

jbj137 03-31-2013 06:56 AM

Who need antiques when you can get bargains like this.

meow meow 03-31-2013 10:28 AM

WOW I wish I could find sales like that. Have fun with all your babies. That table looks really good and as stated by someone else it looks a lot sturdier then the one I have from Joannes.

solstice3 03-31-2013 10:52 AM

OMG!!!! what a GREAT table!!!!!!!

cricket_iscute 03-31-2013 11:25 AM

Wow! You did great! A 301, a Bernina, all the fiddlies, a table, rulers, more. And if I understand right, for about $50? How did you find these?

The joke may be on me though. The Bernina's got a lot of work yet to encourage it to go. The 301 is due for its bath today or tomorrow, then I'll sew on it and see if I prefer it to my short bed. I like the rehab part (except when they've been peed on) of the sewing machines. I do more of that than sewing. :)

Well, DH must have been restless on Saturday, because he wanted to go to the Antique show anyway. Who am I to argue if the man feels like shopping! :D I found a glass bottle of Singer oil I couldn't resist taking home.

Yup, $51 total. It was complete and utter dumb luck. The table was given to the lady I got it from (I'd fixed her serger), she said she didn't have room for it, and could I use it for working on machines. I saw it and instantly thought cutting table, and told her that. She was happy to see it go to someone who would use it.

The rest was all a moving sale that was advertised in the Buy and Sell. The 301 was priced too high for a machine that didn't work, so I showed her what was wrong (the handwheel didn't turn) and she asked what I would pay for it. We agreed on the $40. The Bernina was not "for sale" but I asked because the ad had said there were sewing machines and she mentioned that her friend across the street (the other half of the moving sale) had one that didn't work, and to ask her about it. I wandered over, and that's what I found. :) I got the Singercraft guide with the Bernina, she didn't know what it was, and was going to throw it out.

I did drop the machine I'd promised the Bernina lady off on Saturday when we went in to the Antique sale. She was pretty happy, and I think surprised to see us so soon.
