Repainting a Featherweight Sewing Machine

I'm thinking about having one of my featherweights repainted. Has anyone done this and, if so, what are your favorite colors. I'm just wondering what a popular color would be, other than the black, white, or tan. If you have photos of one that's been repainted, I would love to see them. :o

RED, love the red ones, think I've only seen one.

How about HOT pink? That may be the only way I can get a pink machine. But I would suggest choose your favorite color.

Bluelady 06-29-2012 07:29 AM

I am thinking about doing the same thing. I can't decide between purple, teal or blue though! So many beautiful choices.

Bluelady 06-29-2012 07:32 AM

If you do a google search for images of Painted Featherweight 221s you can see a few pictures of different colors.

I'd like to see a camo'd one.

I love my "Eric the Red" which I bought on e-bay over a year ago. I did "madame Butterfly" myself. Not the greatest job but I had fun doing it (she was in really poor shape before) I just won a burnt orange featherweight on e-bay. My youngest granddaughter's favorite color is orange and she likes to sew, so "someday" it will be hers.

harrishs 06-29-2012 08:23 AM

this picture doesn't do them justice, they are much shinier and the red is a deep red.....

misskira 06-29-2012 08:56 AM

My avatar is my 1948 Featherweight repainted purple. Just looking at it makes me smile. I bought it about 3 months ago on craigslist for $140, just happened to be online at night and look about 1/2 hour after it was posted and immediatedly emailed that I wanted it. It is a metallic purple, and I would probably have been my second choice if I was picking a color to paint it (my first choice would be a metallic royal blue). I also have a black featherweight and wouldn't have it reapinted but it is in pretty nice condition. I think this one was probably cosmetically challenged judging by the condition of the case.

Quite the variety of gorgeous painted machines! I'd have to vote for the dark purple one with the tole painting on it! :)

Harrishs--I bet the orange one was the one I was following, very pretty.
Surfergirl- I love the red ones, also saw a candy apple red one that was just beautiful and it became a bidding war on ebay and sold for $3500, wow. I would look at the website provided above, lots of pictures and then pick your favorite color. Let us see it when it's done.

Nanamoms 06-29-2012 07:23 PM

Red, red, red, what else...my fav color...LOL

Oh, I LOVE that!!

My grandmother was an Okie in California! She moved there in the 30s from Muskogee. She was a wonderful woman.

JMCDA 06-30-2012 04:17 AM

you could buy a black one and take it to an automotive guy to repaint for less than that one ended up costing!

I have one destined for a repaint and I too can't decide what colour but am leaning towards red if I just paint it...however being an artist I might have to dress it up a little with some flowers etc.

Linda - K. 06-30-2012 08:09 AM

My FW does not need to be painted but I've seen the repainted ones and they are gorgeous! I just don't know what color I would pick if It came to repainting mine. They are all so pretty. One thing I liked about the repainted ones is that the person that did them put the stencils back on them.

ORSunshineQuilter 06-30-2012 10:23 AM

My DH painted one for me with car paint called Chameleon. It turns from purple to green, depending on where the light hits it. It is beautiful and I never fail to get compliments when I take it to class! It's really fun!

Latrinka 06-30-2012 10:25 AM

I vote for purple!

Lynn, check my attached photobucket, there are some pics of the machines we have done. That may give you some ideas, I just love them painted and I also love them original. Haven't found my favorite color yet, still trying them all. LOL Best wishes with your choice.

There were a few of our members (before the format changed) that had colored Featherweights as their avatar. One was Purple, one was Red and one was Blue. I haven't seen them in a while. Perhaps LostN51 would have a few pictures of one. My DH is going to paint one Purple for me. My favorite color.

I love the Kandy Apple red. I also like the pink on your avatar. Thanks for sharing.

Saw a hot pink metallic FW at a quilt show last year. Funky! LOL

Grannyh67 07-01-2012 06:44 AM

I would love to have a purple one, or hot pink, and @ Joe you crack me up, Cameo would be your choice, lol....sounds like you. You must be quiet a character. Love reading your quot's.

Surfergirl 07-01-2012 08:39 AM

Yes, Elliot's featherweight is gorgeous!

misskira 07-01-2012 10:03 AM

I think I really love the flat turquoise one here. I like that it has no metallic or pearl in the paint. Like a vintage car. I may have to look for a fw in need of a paint job and have dh paint her up for me. I would want decals though.

Surfergirl 07-04-2012 04:01 AM

I still haven't decided on a color for my featherweight, but I am in the process of stripping it down. Does anyone have a good method of removing the brass medallion without damaging it?

Its in the book by Dave Mccallum. I dont have it handy. I think you pop off the rivets inside the machine, then put the badge back on with little screws and glue the original rivet heads back. I can check later when I have my book handy if no one else has an idea.

Help, I'm confused. How were the decals maintained on all those painted ones?

Stripped off then new decals reapplied. My assumption is most of the repainted ones were in poor cosmetic condition to begin with.

After repainting, new decals are put in place, then several clear coats are applied.

A couple of sewing machines I have repainted. These machines were all in poor cosmetic condition.
