If it is a good, old Singer then it may be worth it. Don't know of any army green machines, except, non-Singer. If an Elna of Pfaff, then it may be worth a whirl, but parts are harder to find. Probably need cleaning and oil to make it go. Look at Joe's posts to find out what to do to old, stuck, machines. Love that Green machine |
My husband bought my little 185J at a thrift store for $5. It was on a day that one of my very good friends passed away. He would never try to add to my sewing machine addiction but I think he knew how sad I was that day and he thought it might cheer me up. I had mentioned the machine to him the day before and that I was thinking about buying it because I knew I could get it working. It would not run because the finger of the bobbin was not inserted correctly. We downloaded the manual, cleaned it, oiled and greased and she sews like a dream. Her name is Maggie after my friends dog that we kept while she was in the hospital. My sister saw it and the next thing I knew she had it at her house so her granddaughter could sew with her. I doubt I will ever get it back but Miss Maggie is a jewel of a machine. The feet from the FW fit her. I don't think you will regret buying it.

well, my mom came to help at my house because of my hand, and we talked about it. She got her purse, and gave me seven dollars towards it! So, on the way home from work tonight, Scott stopped. Here's the thing. It isn't ten anymore. it is $15.99. AND someone stole the face plate. He said he is certain it was covered before (I am too) and now, you can see the inside guts of the needleworks.
Isn't that ridiculous?! I am certain it was $9.99 that day. And how could someone have taken the faceplate? I wonder if that was done on purpose. An employee maybe? I cannot imagine one of you guys doing that!! Who else would know so much, and care so much about an old sad machine? Isn't that terrible? Of course, he didn't get it. Makes me wish we had gotten it that first day, but I didn't have the money that day. Which just makes me sad all over again! Who is going to want it now? Someone has to have a plan. Right? Right? |
I learned a similar lesson with a little green 185j...we stopped in at a local thrift store on our way to visit a friend and found a gorgeous machine in a case, all intact. Well, trying to be responsible because I already have one in a cabinet we left it behind - that machine bugged us all day until we stopped in again on our way home and guess what - she was still there but the needleplate etc was missing :-( :-(

Jmcda, I am not sure if that makes me feel better . . . or worse! ;0) This makes me wonder about the slide plate for the Singer 248 I got a while ago. Wonder if someone 'salvaged' it too. Hmm.

I have a green 185 that my daughter picked up at a thrift shop for $10. It came with a junky table. It needs a tension adjustment, but we haven't gotten around to it. She bought it because she liked the color. So now we have six machines and the spare room is full.
