Singer 101 Top Plate Removed

I have had this machine for some time but we are just now getting around to messing with it. When my DH removed the top plate and the bottom part here is what he found. I was just wondering what is the purpose of all of the tenacles coming out. I have never seen anything like this before.

They are oil wicks This machine has a very different oiling system than most, you are suppose to fill the reservoir and then the oil is transported via the wicks to where it needs to be.

It wasn't one of Singers "better ideas" and they went another direction with later machines.

Holy cow, I didn't know that was ever done. Thank you, Macybaby, for coming to the rescue on that one!

Glad that Singer didn't go with that idea for very long!
