Singer 1022: Replace Motor????

After 20 years on a shelf and about 10 hours of usage, the machine was lubricated (top and bottom); the motor failed to start because of suspected starting winding problem. There was a small puff of white smoke and disconnected the power source. Request information: (1) applicable past experience; (2) avenues of troubleshooting; (3) parts availability; (4) other suggestions and information.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

1. Have a Kenmore 84 that smoked when I got it. Called a repairman for a new motor, he refused to sell me on until the one I have burned out. He assured me that it wasn't going to catch fire, that it would simply quit working...perhaps putting off smoke when it quit.

2. Run it until it quits. My machine is still going strong with the same motor it came with, and it no longer smokes.

3. Hard to give you advice on parts availability when we don't know what you have. What kind of machine is it?

4. See #2.

:)

Sorry...guess you gave the machine model in your thread title...I didn't catch that initially!

You might get in touch with Miriam and see if she has parts for your machine... Cathy probably would, but she's taking a break right now.

We have a Singer 413 that had a sluggish motor that oscillated RPMs as it ran. Our LSMG told us to pull the belt off, and run it at full speed till it cleared up. He said it might need cleaned out. Then he said to clean them out he hosed the inside of the motor with lighter fluid then ran them. I did clean the motor but used break clean, it's a bit less flammable. The motor came back to life and it was running better and better ..... then it stripped the teeth off a plastic gear.

Like Charlee said, run it till it dies. These things get arthritis when they sit unused.
