Singer 99

I bought a Singer 99 at a thrift store. I am cleaning out the lint and oiling it. A lot of lint but in real good shape. When I started to clean the bobbin area there is a red piece that I throught was thread but when I pulled on it I knew it wasn't thread. It is more like felt and it is looks like it is stuck in a spring so I left it along. Is this the right thing to do? Thank you, Sandy

Sorry the first pic is not clear. Sandy

That piece of felt is a lubrication wick for the bobbin carrier to hook contact area. The 66s and 99s had them. You were correct to leave it in. Put a couple drops of oil on it when ever you oil the machine.

I have just acquired a 99 also, complete with the 'little red bit of felt'. I phoned a friend who has several vintage machines and they assure me that this is meant to be there. So no worries. lol
