Standard treadle owner still needs help......
 

We cleaned off the flip plate and the last date on my machine is copywright 1887. I am still missing a bobbin case and bobbin for it. Of all things, I found and purchased a Spider. Boy was I excited! :D Was all ready to go try my machine out by making a chain stitch. Pooh! It didn't fit! :( Or I need something to make it go in correctly. I have a whole bunch of attachments for it now.

Up North.....are you out there???? You posted a picture of your machine on my past thread and yours was made in 1889. Got any info for me? Anyone else??? I love this machine and really want to get it going. I'm sure most people would toss their hands up in the air and give it a toss but I really like the challenge of getting the parts and sewing on these old ones.

What's that old saying?......"It's me again, Margaret." Well I'm not Margaret but it is me again. In that last sentence I meant to say: I have learned that not all of the Standards, depending on the year manufactured, are the same.

Please post a photo of your spider. First, I need to see if you have the correct spider for the Standard, then maybe I can be of help to you since I own and have used my Standard's attachments: hemmer and chain stitcher (spider).
The Standard spider takes a bit of figuring out how it fits in. I did this without a manual; so, it can be done!

My spider is different than yours so now we have two examples on the website. So that is good. The spider I have came in a metal box of attachments that said 'Standard' on the top. All the other attachments are correct. I have attempted in a couple of pictures to give measurements of the post and hole in the center. This seems to be my problem. Am so glad you answered my post! Thank you.

This hemmer is used with the spider.

Hoping everyone with a Standard will post pictures and info so we can figure out what years will fit which spider. I have also seen a picture of a different looking bobbin case than you have but the sewing machine had so much corrosion the fellow couldn't get me a year off of it. Somewhere I have seen a hemmer attachment just like the one you are showing. I'm hoping my machine isn't too old for a spider attachment.

So, you can't get that spider to fit at all. Does it slide in part of the way?

Can you get a measurement as to how wide your post is on your spider? I see yours is solid where mine has a hole in it. I'm thinking mine is missing a piece that should be inside the post. Does just the end of your post fit into the hole of the bobbin race or does the whole thing slip in?

The entire post fits into the tube with the hole located in the race. It will not go entirely in unless all is lined up just right. I find that I have to have the needle up (naturally) and the race rotated just right for the spider to slide in. Plus for the spider to fully seat in properly, the spring/bar (the little bar on the spider that moves) must be held so that the bar is out of the way.

I had to study the spider and then study the race to figure out how they both work together. Then I just rotated the race until I was able to slide the spider in, trial and error. When removing the spider, I have to do the pretty much the same thing, trial and error or what works and what doesn't.

Even if your spider is missing the center solid that mine has, it should still slide into the hole of the tube in the race.

I will measure later on this evening for you. The natives at home are getting hungry. I best feed them.:)

If you look at your bobbin case and compare it closely with mine you will see they are built different. Mine does not have the overhang that yours has where your spider fits underneath. Also the tube on mine is too large to fit either inside or outside the tube on my bobbin race. It's a no go. Hope others with Standards will post here if they have a spider like mine so we can see what years it will fit. This is very interesting. I think these Standards are a really pretty machine and need kept running. I'm going to keep looking for a bobbin and bobbin case for mine. It moves so quietly when running. Who knows......I just may find one. Keep in touch! And thank you.

I did notice that and also that the bar spring on your spider looks longer and different. So, since the spider doesn't slide into the race bar, then maybe this spider goes with a different machine, not necessarily a Standard.

Your spider may possibly go to another machine. There were some sewing companies that made machines that were able to convert to chain stitching by using a "spider".

This is taken from notes that I had kept from a discussion on another board.

Machines that can convert to chain stitch with attachments:
White Rotaries (not sure if all models convert)(spider & special throat plate)
Domestic VS (spider & special throat plate)
Standard Stout (spider & (not sure but,) maybe special throat plate)
Kenmore several models (spider & special throat plate)

The Standards are pretty machines that have a pretty little hum, like a graceful lady.

Yup! I knew about the Touch and Throw, but I doubt that crappy machine would have a chain stitch attachment that looked like this one; so, I took it off the list.

Here is a picture of my attachments box the spider came in. Any info about the box? This should be a clue as to what machine this spider fits. My spider post measures the same as Vintagemotif's tho it looks a bit different. Would be nice to have pictures from other Standard Sewing Machine owners of their bobbin race, spider (if they have one), bobbin case and bobbins along with what year their machines were made. I sure didn't know the other machines mentioned would do a chain stitch. Very interesting!

I have a blue box like this that says attachments on the outside and inside are the Greist attachment similar to yours. The box came with one of my Two Spools.

I have the hemmer that you have for my Standard.

What is interesting in your box is the two items that are shaped like bullet shells. What are they? One is located in the bottom left side of box. Never seen an attachment like that. That isn't for the spider to fit into and then the bullet shape item sits in the tube of the race? (Wild guess)

I looked at the bullet shells and one has the end of a pencil in it. Not lucky enough for them to be an attachment part. I phoned my Mom and asked what they were and just by my description (without telling her about the pencil stub) Mom said they were on the ends of pencils years ago instead of an eraser. They are pretty cute. Look like fake lipsticks.

Does look like lipstick tubes, like a cover.

I remember those bullet things things with pencils - i think there was something that went on the other end - can't remember what though

Hi, I am looking for the Standard sewing machine needle plate that is the shape of the 3/4 moon. Can anyone tell me where to purchase one or does anyone have a spare that I can buy from? The machine I have is missing the needle plate so I cannot use it without the needle plate. Thanks so much everyone, any information on this particular needle plate would be greatly appreciated.

Hi beautiful people, I have a 1887 Standard (slim). My bobbin case is older, it does not have a little handle like the one posted by vintagemotif, but it is plain and flat with two cut out holes at the side for grasping (I think). I have a spider too as well as the chain stitch needle plate. I just don't understand why the stitches shred on the underside when I try to do the chain stitch with the spider...:( Any suggestions?

I have a Standard (patented 1887) slim, but the bobbin case looks different. There is no tab on my bobbin case, just two cut out holes to pluck it out. I understand that there were variations to the Standard rotary machines, the 'newer' ones can do the chain stitch (with the right needle plates) pretty well. Mine is still shredding the threads in chain stitch mode.....still trying to figure out what went wrong. Oh but the lock stitch is just beautiful. I don't have the treadle base, so I am trying to put it on a normal Singer treadle base to see if I can still operate the machine with the right hinge holes (modified) on the table. Wish me luck!

Usually if there is thread shredding there is a burr some place. Trace the thread path, including the needle and look/feel for burrs.

Your attachments, especially the spider, are for a Standard Stout. Identifying feature is the hollow pin on the spider.

Wow! My machine is older than the oldest in the survey. Serial number 58676. No spider for her obviously. Glad I happened to get back to this conversation. Thanks everyone.

Does anybody have a needle plate for the standard chain stitch? Pic of top and bottom would be appreciated.
