Substitution Parts
 

I'd love to compile a list of substitution parts for the machines we rehab, and parts that don't work, to save people duplicating the same effort for nothing.

There are parts that are easy to find (brushes for the 201-2 and the FW for instance) and there are parts that are not so easy to find. So we find others that work, make some of them, etc...

I'll start:
Today, my parts arrived, with 4 experimental parts.

So, the 201-3 is notoriously hard to find parts for. Not the hook, and the spool pin plate parts... the things like the motor wicks, brushes, etc.

Singer says that the Wicks are part # (I think the part number is:) 194490 - they're the really skinny ones that fit into the "tubes" so will fit other motors too. The parts diagram doesn't have the wicks it, but they're much smaller than the ones that fit the FW, 15-91 and 201-2 motors. I'm quite sure I have other motors here too that have the thin tubes to fill. These would be the wicks inside them. The 201-3 I have here is a BAJ motor

The Brushes are part #196862 and I found no listing at all for them

Today I used HF30135 for the wicks. They were long enough, I could cut one in half and do both tubes, and skinny enough. My cost was $0.14 These are called Hook Wicks, for top mount bobbins. Singer part.
For the brushes, I used 190782, which is for another motor, but the brushes fit just fine into the 201-3 motor. My cost was $2.10 each. Singer Part.

In other news, I was looking for a frame spring for the bobbin winder on the 115 (shares with the 66 and some 99s, either way, it's a discontinued number),.. the one from the 201 / 15 is -not- compatible. The springs wind in opposite directions.

The 411G that has the floppy spool pins? I was told to use featherweight feet 45780 in there to take up the slack from the missing corral looking "washers". It will require a drill and some convincing, but I will report back when I have a chance to do this tomorrow when my hands are steadier.

Where did you order motor brushes - how do you know what to order - I have a couple machines would benefit from new brushes. Singer 404s

ARGH! I don't remember exactly how I decided these would be right. I remember using calipers, and finding the width of the brushes. Then there's a gap in my memory as to how I determined that the other number had the same width.

I recently became a dealer for one of the main distributors of sewing machine stuff here in Canada, and that number was on their list, so I ordered them. ( So in fairness, the $ figure I gave was a wholesale price, but in practice, I find us online retail is pretty similar to my wholesale price) It's possible Jenny could get them for you? I'm about to leave the house for a bit, but when I get home, I'll go get the calipers and take a size reading of the brushes (4mm rings a bell), and let you know what it is. If the widths are good, length doesn't matter a lot. I bet a bunch of them share, but Singer had slightly different lengths, or just wanted to be difficult and change up the numbers but no one knew there was a superceded number. Or maybe I just didn't know, and went to more work than I needed to. :D

The second hit (fleabay) has the dimensions in it. The 201-3 brushes are 3.97mm when I measured with the calipers. These were 4mm. I was pretty sure that was close enough for a non-german, non-japanese built machine. :)

Oops. Ok, on a lot of things the US retail is comparable or sometimes better. For instance, her FW bobbin cases are less $ than I can buy one for. The brushes are not one of those items.

BTW, the brushes for the 404 are still available. The chart I have says the brushes for the "class 400 series" are part # 192457. It says the motor is a PAB 13-8 motor, is that what's in the 404?

They're more than the other brushes, but shouldn't break the bank.

ETA, google says those are the same brushes as for the 221.... so those are on Jenny's site

I just put some in a 401 - WOW machine sure sounds a lot better

One thing I'd really like to get is the motor bearing for the 40x /50x series. I don't know if I need one, but there are a couple I think may be louder and noisier than they need to be. (Of course it could be that the 411 is just that much quieter.) My supplier doesn't have them though, Jenny does, but I have so little to order from her now. :(

Have you changed one out? What noises went away? Does the gear that turns the fiber gear still pop up and down as much when it starts?
