Trying to learn - what model Necchi is this?

http://appleton.craigslist.org/atq/3425452220.html

Not really interested in buying it at the moment (though $45 seems like a good deal) but I'm interested in learning how to tell the difference between the various models from a picture.

pcDH,

I wish I could answer your question. I have seen Necchis such as this discussed on this forum, so if you are any good at searches you might find one of those threads. It's probably in the Vintage SM Shop thread.

Your question however begets another question. Did Necchi have a Japanese factory, and did they sell badged machines?

My Aldens Magic ZZ ( Made In Japan),

is almost identical to the Necchi (Made in Italy) in your CL add.

If I didn't know better I'd say they were made in the same factory.

That is a Necchi BU...Excellent machine and a good price. Very Strong Sewer. Pre-necchi Super Nova.

Dan beat me. It is a BU, pre 1950. The VN was changed to a V in 1949 or 50. My BF is a straight stitch model.

No, Joe, Necchis were made machines in Italy only. The New York distributor for Necchi decided to make machines and he used a Japanese factory. The first name wasn't far from Necchi - if it wasn't the same - and Necchi sued him so he changed the name to Nelco. My Japanese made Admiral looks like a clone to my Necchi and it was manufactured by Brother as far as I can find out. Some of these machines that aren't well marked can be puzzles.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Very nice bit of information on the N -vs- VN thing.

I would buy it in a heartbeat. Good price and that Necchi model is on my wish list.

Dan,
Sorry about deflecting your thread. Since our machines are sooooo similar looking I couldn't resist.

irishrose,
Thanks for the information. Now if I could just find out who made it I'd be tickled.

Joe
