I got a Viking 6430 at a sale. No manual. Any help out there.

Join the vintage viking group on yahoo. There are a few manuals posted, but you can e-mail the list owner and he'll gladly e-mail you a manual. Probably for a different model, but should still help you.

You've got a great machine there, one of my favorites. I've had two -- the 6440 and the 6570. Do all the dials turn freely? After a certain age, they tend to freeze up and require maintenance from an experienced SMG. The other common problem is the take up lever which tends to break after a few decades too. Sometimes the camstack needs to be replaced also. However, once it's in tip-top shape, it's a dream to sew on, really sweet. You can get a list of trusted mechanics in the file section of the Yahoo group.
I see you have a few cams too. You're showing my very favorite, the B cam with that graceful serpentine stitch. Love that one! Congratulations, and let us know how it turns out. PS Let's see if I can upload a pic of my baby. |

The cams? Oh yeah, they go in the back. Here's what the operating manual for the 6570 says (parentheses are mine):
"Changing the stitch programmer. Set the white dot on the stitch selector (top left dial) opposite the indicator dot (it's white, so you line up the white dot on the dial with the white dot on the machine), as shown at the left (of the manual), and take out the programmer at the back of the machine and replace it with the one you wish to use. After having placed the programmer in position, press in and at the same time, turn it until you can feel that it is engaged." Looking at your machine, it looks like the dots on your machine are red, so you'll probably have to line up the red dot with a dot on the top left dial. But, honestly, it's best to get the manual first, so that you can get model specific instructions. I wouldn't want you to damage it. Once you sign up with the Yahoo group, the moderator will send you a free digital copy of the manual once you request it of him by email. I think I sent him a little zip drive. Hope this helps. I have a friend who repairs and maintains the 6000 series of Vikings. He lists the CD version of the manuals on Ebay. Here is a current auction #: 120673757892. He is a great guy and a good resource if you have questions about your machine.
Totosmom is right about the common problems of aging in those Vikings. But they are wonderful machines and very durable. Enjoy! Dayle |
