I just picked up the second 301 and a 500A and 503A. I can't think of it in terms of wasting my time considering the 500A is supposed to be one of the best for doing decorative stitches. The others, although I love them, don't do anything but straight stitch and I want to end up with at least one machine that I can get a little fancier with (when the need arises..lol) |

Since most of the time I can find a machine for cheaper than if I have to purchase parts off of ebay or elsewhere, it becomes the parts machine, a backup. Remember I'm the treadle person, so not into electric machines. So, my frustration last night is carrying over to throw the dang electric plastic machines out. Sorry, I forgot that is was cool looking "Jeston" Rocketeer. Keep that machine! |
jtapp, I'm thinking the needle on the 500. Put it away and sew on a another machine until you go to town, and just fun, pick up some Singer needles. My 301 will not FMQ without breaking the thread with a Schmetz needle. I am not a fan of Singer needles, but she is. I am FMQ right now. I'd like to put in a Schmetz needle just to see what happens, but I'm not going to. The machine is being perfect and rayon thread isn't fun to take it because it breaks too easily. The 500 is one of the machines I'd like to have so I'm interested in what you find out.
Laura59, I don't know if the FW has the same type of paint as the 301, but I had to clean my tan 301 with Oxyclean. The machine was even colored, but yellowish and didn't feel clean. It was layered with that grungy yellow-tan coating that heavy smokers leave behind. It's very clean now and the small part I waxed looks good. I didn't wax it all yet because there are few more things I want to do with it first. |

Miriam, Gutermann thread perhaps? I have tried it, Coats N Clark, Connecting Threads, Aurifil and some cheap a$$ 2/$1 thread from Walmart that I'm trying to use up...lol. I knew the machine wasn't quite right when I bought it. I'm sure its probably something simple but those are the ones that drive a person the craziest..hahaha. I"m going to try moving the thread because it does jerk a lot. I've tried threadign it differently, don't remember where I read another way to do it, but I've tried that way.
