Just picked up an old sewing machine that looks a lot like a 1947/9 Singer (which I bought at the same time). It was named St James. Underneath it was stamped with Koyo.

Tried searching everywhere for a date or a manual on this machine and thought I'd try here.

Any ideas on the age/manufacture of this machine.

Hi and welcome Tarkine. Do you have a picture? That could help, plus we like to oohh and aahh over everyone's machines. :) Just going by the description, does it look anything like the model 15 "clones"? Miriam started a picture thread for them: Will the real 15 clone please stand up. They are machines made in Japan after WWII where the design is based on the Singer 15. Excellent machines, difficult to date unless you have an original bill of sale or something like that.

I make charity quilts too. Both for Quilts of Valor and The Linus Connection. I'd show a picture of the latest Linus quilt except it was made on my newest machine. A Husqvarna Viking Sapphire 875, has a 10" throat space.

I'm sorry to hear that your Mom passed away. Its so hard when a parent passes, but know that she is in a better place now free from pain and illness. Hugs to you and your family.
My Mom passed away in 1999, she died of a brain aneurysm; so it was very sudden.

I hope you are right Charlee. If I do get her going, she will cost more than if I had bought one in better shape and paid a bit more in the beginning. Guess there is the satisfaction of getting a hopeless one going. I'll carry your mental image with me to the workbench today. lol

Candace, my hat is off to you! How large are these quilts? They must be at least lap quilts! That is a lot of work. I have been doing a lot of Quilt as you Go on large lap quilts, but I have not done a larger than lap FM for some time. I have a long arm so if I am doing a queen/king sized quilt I always do it on the long arm. Before I got my long arm, I did several queen/king sized quilts with my Pfaff 1222e on the dinning room table! I really enjoyed the quilting of these large quilts, but it took me a month to get one done so I had to time them between family events so the table was free! I could never work for 10 hours straight FM quilting! I'd do a couple hours and go play then come back and do a couple hours! The reason I quit doing the large quilts was the pinning! It took me 4 hours of sitting on the floor pinning a quilt! Hard on the back! Like I said my hat is off to any of you who sit for hours free motion quilting - and those of you who pin for hours on the floor!

Melinda, until you lose a parent no one understands the hurt. It is like a part of you dies. You will always have your mother in your heart. I lost both my parents 6 days apart and the pain was unbearable at times, but they never really leave you, you always carry them as part of you. Parents are so much a part of who we are that they will always be with us. So sorry for your loss.

Charlee did you paint the fabric squares? I know I already asked, but I don't think you answered? I was curious if they are decoupage or you painted them? They look painted to me, and if so you are very talented!
