What model is this machine?
 

Would someone please tell me what model this Singer machine is please? Is it a general straight stitch machine?

It looks like my Singer modle 12.

Enlarging the photo doesn't help much, but it doesn't appear to have the narrow slide plate to the front of the machine like a model 13 does, so I'd agree that it's a New Family 12....if I understand the research correctly, made from the 1860's to the 80's...(don't quote me on that!)
It is a straight stitch, transverse shuttle machine. (I'll post a link) It takes a boat shuttle, and if I'm not mistaken an odd needle.

Well, dh and I are off for a road trip :-) I'll be sure to fill you in on the gorey details. Finally connected with the man selling it and says 'it's missing a part on the top by the hand wheel'. Hm. He kept saying it would make a good 'parts' machine.

Time will tell. Unless the iron is in terrible shape we'll most likely take it and at the very least convert it to -gasp- a table. But I ain't throwing me hat in the ring jest yet. :-)

Oookaaay. Here goes.

YES! She is home <bg> She's fairly dirty and will take some time cleaning her up but the good news is the shuttle is there and there are two bobbins one of the drawers. No guarantee they go to this machine though. Don't know if there is one in the shuttle yet and may not get that far tonight. I'm pretty beat. (Sorry, I've been up since 2:20 this morning.)

She is adorable. Decaling is still evident but then again I can't figure out what model she is for me to get a look at another machine to compare. Her table is definately shot, beyond shot actually, but the cover and the drawers are very salvagable. <yeah me!> Um, hubber... :-)

Regardless of the photos, she really doesn't have heavy rust. I'm guessing her wheel will clean up pretty decent.

If anyone, hint, hint, could help me identify this model I would be appreciative.

The bobbin winder - hm, not sure if it is completely intact or not. I think it might be. Surely new rubber is on the shopping list.

Can't quite figure out how to date her - this is how her numbers read - 616865 space, just space, not like something is missing, then 504865. Last patent date on her slide plate is Oct 9, 1855. Oh, and the center slide plate was found by dh in one of the drawers. Sweet!

So I think I'm getting there - correct me if I'm wrong. As you thought Charlee and KatFish, she IS a model 12, New Family. Her decaling is the 'Star' ornamentation.

Thanks to NB, I read for the machines that have two sets of numbers to use the first for dating, which would put her circa 1871

She's beautiful!! Go easy on the cleaning, lots of patience and lots of sewing machine oil! I know how crusty she looks, but please don't take the shortcuts of using a stronger cleaner...I suspect you have a LOT more decal there than shows!!

Great find. Can hardly wait to see what she looks like all spiffed up. Does the machine turn? Get a healthy drink of new oil.

I hope the table can be saved. The tops are solid wood I believe. So you could have a replacment made using the old one for a model. Or ask Glenn, he seems to be able to save anything wood.
