I caved and bought this W&W #9..but I'm pretty happy with it :) Just wished it would have came with a glass pressure foot. I have one for a 9 but no inserts yet...

Really nice!! :)

I might be wrong, but don't think the later 9W came with the glass feet....and they're not all they're cracked up to be (pun intended) as one "mis-stitch" can shatter them.

I don't sew with mine at all...they're cool to have, but I won't chance breaking them.

Think it's the WW#8 and earlier with the glass slippers. My #9 attachments are all steel. Going on road trip to pick up a WW#8 tomorrow.

Enjoy your #9, looks beautiful.

Jon

Charlee 08-03-2012 08:52 PM

Jon, not to argue, but I thought the early 9s had glass too?

jlhmnj 08-03-2012 09:33 PM

Could be, I'm only familiar with the steel and the glass feet on the #8 though I'm very far from WW Guru.

Jon

edit: I will search the Needlebar as I'm real curious now.

Found a good picture in the QB (awesome resource).

What did you find Jon?

Charlee 08-04-2012 06:19 AM

:) Nevermind, I found your other post!

What a pretty cabinet, too. Now that I have this WW D9 head, I know what she's supposed to look like. Haven't cleaned her up at all yet but either all her decals are gone or they are buried under alot of grime.

jlhmnj 08-04-2012 11:21 AM

Let me know if you find them as I can't find mine either. ;)

Yes Charlee, the WW will sew without the glass feet. I don't want to shatter the one and only that I have. The OSMG I purchased my WW8 from didn't even know they came with glass feet. The test swatches he did were all done without the glass feet and looked good to me. I am curious though, why glass inserts for the pressure foot? Any ideas?

Charlee 08-04-2012 04:01 PM

According to the patent, it was for visability... :)

wow someone gave that beautiful cabinet a good refinishing..I have a Wheeler/Wilson 9 too..machine is in great condition..cabinet is good too.

AnnaF 08-05-2012 01:02 PM

Just to follow up on my comments, I bartered my longarm services with a friend for that machine. I'm from Maine (lifer) so we all love to barter a deal. LOL

jlhmnj 08-05-2012 01:27 PM

Very cool. I see a lot of bartering going on in Craigslist and often wondered about it. I usually barter in cash though :)

Beautiful quartersawn oak cabinet !

I didn't know you had W&W enthusiasts here! I don't remember the number of mine but it manufactured in 1871, and looks like a telegraph key. Interesting box lid too--was supposed to be able to hold a gas lamp to see better. It has the glass foot, but no belt.

nygal 08-10-2012 01:34 PM

OH it is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's two w9's here on c/l for sale now, one in eugene one in florence, both are 6 drawer... There $100 and $125..

I have seen photo's of what " they say" is a glass foot for a w 9, I don't have one, and no idea of it's year... in looking at the wooden goodie box, this one has to have more stuff in it ,than what came new or not every thing fit in that box.

It was made before me, so all I have to go by is the "They say's"

Msskolten04 08-24-2012 04:52 PM

So how many of you have dared to sew with the glass pressure foot so far? I haven't gotten my #8 up and running just yet, still a project in the making (as many of the "projects" I have)! I only have the one glass insert for that one and I'm very afraid of breaking it. Also, have any of you ever tried to make or have someone make reproduction ones at all?

Charlee 08-24-2012 08:48 PM

Fox, I'd love to see pics of your machine! Is it a W&W6?

I have used my 8 with the glass foot in place, but was VERY watchful and careful. I didn't do much, just some "test sewing" with it as I'm just too concerned over the fragility of the decals to do much else! I would advise, if you are going to use the machine with the glass foot in place that you go slow and steady, making sure that the needle isn't pulled so that it doesn't hit the glass.

I've never checked into having new glass inserts made. When I get to the point that I'm ready to make a quilt on the 8, I will use the steel straight stitch foot that I have for it. (Yes, I'm a big chicken!! :D )

J Miller 08-25-2012 04:01 AM

Charlee,

Is that really being a chicken, or is it being cautious?

Joe

Charlee 08-25-2012 06:27 AM

Both Joe! :) I have never really seen any feedback about the glass feet, but considering that W&W made and sold them for many years, they must have been at least somewhat successful and sturdy. That would point to the "chicken" part of me... the idea that they most likely would be difficult at best to replace would be the cautious part! :)

Caroline S 08-25-2012 06:45 AM

I am thinking that the reason that the glass feet are so rare is that they did get broken, a lot. They may have been successful but Singer may have decided that it was not an improvement to continue with after purchasing Wheeler & Wilson for cost reasons.

At some point the sewing machine owner likely discovered that the machine would sew without the glass feet inserts. Likely the glass feet were more readily available a hundred years ago. Like Charlee, I am hesitant to sew on mine as I have only one of the glass feet.
