Purpose of this second thread guide?

Christy, When I run my stitcher, the L shaped bar to which you refer seems not to serve a tension purpose, but rather as a stop-bar for the tensioning spring so that it only goes up so far. Keeping the thread behind it and out of the way of the flapping tension spring makes the most natural sense as I watch it work, and if I put it in front, it does not make sense. The machine stitches beautifully this way. However, if there is something I am missing, please correct me; I am no expert!

Keep in mind, that the expired Singer patents that the Japanese HA-1 (clone) was designed from, had the second thread guide on the face plate for bobbin winding. Specifically, the Singer 15-30 had the second thread guide, and I don’t know for sure, but I suspect that the 15-30 patent was the one used by the Japanese. If not, it was a Singer model very close to the 15-30. While the Singer model 15-80 had a spool pin down on the deck, it still had the second thread guide on the face plate. By the early 1940s, Singer had completely re-designed the model 15, including a completely different hook assembly, and the face plate bobbin winder thread guide was not present on the model 15-88.

I just got a singer 15 and need a few parts for her. Where do I start looking? Someone on here had a link to a reference book and cd for sale so we could service our own old machines a few weeks ago. Anyone still have that link?

This is a beautiful machine. However the threading guide reinforces my conviction that for me, I want the simplest and newest model of everything. If I could have it, all my appliances would be stainless steel mounted on wheels and most of my other furniture would be mounted on wheels and weigh less than 50 lbs. I love the vintage machine section read it every day: I love seeing your machines and reading your problems--but I am glad they are yours and not mine! froggyintexas
