I honestly don't remember if the old gears were greased, but I added some lithium grease before I went about sewing and not too long after that the gears started to fall apart.

So I'm guessing I caused the death blows but should I grease the new gears?

Yes, but not lithium grease. It hardens over time. Use Tri Flow grease instead. They advertise it as being safe for most plastics. If you're uncertain, contact them and be sure to tell us their answer.

Beautiful_Sound,

Every Singer I've had apart that still had it's factory plastic gears in it, were greased. Most had some sort of white grease on them and a couple had some yellowish grease. I don't "think" it was lithium grease.
Singer sells a white grease in the little blue tube for plastic gears, that's what I'd suggest you look for if you don't want to order in the Tri-Flow grease.

I have one someone melted the gears - likely liquid wrench. The bottom of the machine is the cleanest one I've ever seen though.
