Restoring or Refinishing Singer 201-2
I purchased a Singer 201-2 and the finish on the machine needs restored. What is the process and what are the steps so that I will know what to purchase and how to do it without ruining it? I would love to pick up the supplies this morning, if possible, since I need to go into town.
Feel free to PM me.

Glenn has a tutorial on restoring the clear coat on old machines. It's well worth the read and lists the materials there.

You might want to check and see if the paint needs cleaning. I have redone many old machines using TR3 and about a million cotton balls. Sometimes you think there is no finish, but after a lot of yucky cotton balls, the shine appears. Does not hurt decals, does not have abrasives. It is made for clear coat car finishes. I bought mine at Pep Boys, and it has done amazing things to many old machines. It takes a lot of elbow grease as you have to work in small circles and use a lot of cotton balls, but it is glorious when done.

Up here, if it looks like the finish might be gone, it probably is. Lots of shellac coated older machines were left out in old barns or sheds for years. I've got a 201-2 from Cut Bank, Montana that is going to need total refinishing because the shellac is just crumbling off. The decals are still in good shape though. I'm a little afraid to surface clean it much yet. And it is stuck solid, so I'm not going to bother refinishing until it actually moves.
