Second thoughts...
I passed on a 1901 Singer 27 treadle with Tiffany decals today. The decals were in really good shape, and the hand wheel turned, however the needle bar and presser foot seemed locked. The sliding needle plates were stuck in place, there was some light rust on the needle plates and hand wheel, but I think it would clean up easily. The tension appeared corroded but decent. There did seem to be one bobbin in the shuttle (there was thread coming out of the shuttle.) The machine was still attached to the wood top (no drawers), but the rest of the cabinet was gone. Only $20 - I may have caved if it had been free of the top. I'm in love with the idea of rescuing, but not real good about following through with the reclamation. Please convince me someone else will come along and love that machine.

I have to say I would have gotten it for the Tiffany decals especially for $20. Did it have the irons? Were there supposed to be drawers? I know I picked up a 1902 15k treadle (not Tiffany decals) that had a bonnet top but it was the wrong one for the hardware in the top. To bad it is in Wisconsin otherwise as I would be the one to come along and love that machine.

Maybe I've been lucky but most of the old machines I've messed with haven't needed much more than a good cleaning and minor things like bobbin tires and belts. They're pretty hard to kill. Even the ones that start out rusted solid can be freed up and made to run again.
