I purchased a table w/bench from my neighbors garage sale. She had been using this as a bedside table and she painted it black and painted the lid closed with the paint (on purpose) When I started home with it, she said I forgot to tell you that there is a sewing machine inside. Since I do not know anything about vintage sewing machines, I will appreciate any comments from the board.

See other post. 306 zig zag. Nice. Another note. Be sure to oil it well, and also be sure to GREASE the gears and linkage once you take the top off. There are alot of moving parts, and they are heavy duty.

Don't forget the special needles this machine uses. They are 206 x 13 and you can find them on Ebay. Guess you noticed these machines weigh 25 pounds. Lot of work horse.

Thanks for the updates on the needles and the maintenance. I am going to have my son refinish the cabinet to the original finish. It is a very heavy machine. Thanks again.

That is a model #56 Singer cabinet and made of walnut (veneer), nice that you got the stool too! I have a 301 in that same cabinet but no stool. Strip the black paint off and it will be beautiful! When I bought mine, the seller included a small 3-drawer singer cabinet didn't match this machine cabinet but does match the #40 cabinet. And I wanted that small cabinet to go with my Mom's #40 cabinet that my Grandfather bought for my Grandmother in 1928 (it is promised to me).

I have a twin to that machine. They have their quirks but are a nice machine. Those were early decorative stitch machines - the disks are still available. Here is a free repair manual: http://parts.singerco.com/IPsvcManuals/306W25.pdf Have some fun - see if you can get it to work. Sew Classic has bobbins, needles and attachments
Here is a link about a 319 - it is very much like your machine but it has additional keys to change the stitches - otherwise it is the same. http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...c-t162425.html I had a lot of work to do on it to make mine work - I did it with everyone's help. It works fine now.

I have been refinishing cabinets and found a neat product to make them look like fine furniture. While looking at Home Depot, I bought brush-on lacquer. It really made them pop. It is $16 per can, but definitely worth it in the end.
