The first two or three numbers are the source code, and the model number is the entire string of number after the - or . . If you drop some of the numbers you might get the base model, but not your machine.
Necessary or no, I always use the entire number.

As far as dating Kenmore machines I have found a list that has the model numbers and the years that number was made ........... BUT I CAN'T FIND IT ..... ARRRGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Joe, is this it? http://www.searsarchives.com/history.../sewing_id.pdf ... If not, it might help someone else out there. According to this her machine was made in 71, 72 or 78.

We do have to have priorities... Don't you love Wilbur's outfit - he picks his own clothes...

Miriam, I hope someday I am half of the grandma that you are to those adorable kids. I've never actually seen a mud pie!!! I've heard of them. Yes, Wilbur shows great sense of color and design! Thanks for the smiles.

Hi, I bought a 626 new many years ago and it does have plastic gears which have needed to be replaced several times. It was not a difficult job to do but finding the gear may be harder. Good luck.
