I would go for it, I love my 301, got it for $125, its the Black long bed. Sews great.. I also think it depends in what area you are in, seems machines go for less in the North..have a hard time finding them down here in AL. Bought mine in AR while on trip home.

Where do you sell them...ebay?? I could never get that much on CL. I recently sold a 403, serviced and fully outfitted with more than it came with when new and had no interest until I lowered the price to $110. I know I can get more on ebay but I don't want to ship and frankly, have never sold on ebay. Here in central NY there is just not much market for old sewing machines.

Oh you know I have to ask. How? The one I have here gave me a little grief, but it was neglected for a while (I assume it takes at least a few days of non-use for the motor pulley to seize solid.) and it had loose wiring in the female connector, and the pedal, and at the back of the male connector. I could blame it for my "sparkling" issue too, but that was 100% me.

ETA: I guess I'm asking, do the parts seem better, or it runs smoother, or,...?
I think for some reason that the German 400 series seem to run quieter and a little nicer than the American and Canadian ones.

I have a black and a mocha - both sew the same, but for some strange reason I like the mocha better.

I wonder if it has anything to do with "eye strain". Jenny mentions it on her blog post:
http://blog.sew-classic.com/2009/03/...ne-review.aspx
"There is a higher demand for the black 301's, but I find the LBOW and mocha machines to be easier on my eyes. The color is more neutral, and results in less eye strain for me."

And she answered my question about cabinets and the long bed.
