You can get new tension springs from Sew-Classic. I'm going to order some for my other 27.
The feed dogs on mine come up a short 1/16" above the needle plate. I haven't sewn with Ella much, just a few test lines really but I haven't noticed any problems with her feeding fabric. I think the feed dogs can be adjusted. Maybe someone with more knowledge can say for sure.

These don't look like they have any adjustment, that I can see anyway. I'll get the tension springy thingy and hopefully that will fix her dragging the thread. Other than being a little tight the stitch looks pretty good. This one will be set on the back burner to stay warm till I get the new part and decals I have another that needs my attention.

While needle height MAY not be adjustable, device manuals go into some detail on adjusting shuttle positioning, by bending the shuttle carrier a little in some cases, the slack between carrier and shuttle is touchy

At least you are getting good stitches, a little tension fiddling, make sure the needle is a new Schmetz, and the right size and type for the work, and then ENJOY

Adjuster's Manual for 127 and 128. Most machines from mid 1913 will be 127s, and I really don't think that they even changed that much from the 27 or even from the VS2 for that matter, so this should be pretty accurate.

Thanks Tammi. That will help a whole lot in getting things set back like they should be. I'll still need to order the tension springy thingy because this one is kinda out of whack. The eye part is a whole lot longer than it should be. I may be able to cut a small amount off and reform the eye. With the spring out I may also be able to take some sand paper or steel wool and smooth the roughness out a bit.

Sometimes the spring can be reshaped. If you do, stress relieve it in the oven after you're finished. It -may- prevent breakage down the road.

I'm not sure I understand the stress relieving part. I've tempered things by heating them cherry red and dropping into either water or oil but this was done with a torch not the oven. Is it the same thing?

I think heating THAT much and quenching will anneal it so it's soft, no springy left!
