I have 2 of them! It looks like a Singer 127 (depends on length of base) with Sphinx decals. Yours looks like it is in great shape! Have you tried to use it? I just love them!! Good find.

That's cool! The ISMACS list says it's a Model 27 from 1909. I have the same machine from 1896 with the same decals. My cabinet is slightly more ornate but that's the only difference. Unfortunately I haven't had a huge amount of time to get mine working really well because the treadle mechanism is a bit stiff and working on the irons is a bit more than I have time for at the moment, but it's always nice to meet buddies with the same machines

Obviously the machine could not have been made before the newest date on that list. Sometime you can do some research and find one that has a later list of patents (like the next patent being 1906 or something) you can then use that to narrow down the date range of your machine.

For example For the early Howe machines there is a specific list of patents that were stamped onthe plates. so, when you find a machine that has only the first 4 patent dates, then you know the machine was made between that date and the next patent date. (because otherwise it would have included that next date...)

makes sense?

P.S. you might want to do some research on that treadle base design. I thought that the sheet metal formed legs were begun in the 30's-40's, but I could very easily be mistaken. It may not be the original.

Might not be I didn't think to ask if it was the original
cabinet. It probably isn't but it fits and works great. You know too that slide plate just might be one he had?
