I think someone gave a hint a while back that if you put it in with the round and flat parts doing the same direction as the round and flat parts of the feed dog plate, that is correct on the featherweights. In other words, flat part facing out/left and round part to the inside/right of the machine. I hope.

be sure to thread it right to left -- it won't catch the bobbin thread unless you do. There are also online instruction books if you didn't get one.

I would buy a book -- it will tell you how to oil, fix, and take things apart if you have trouble. They are very available.
Also look up the old machines thread -- He is so very helpful .

One hint also for your bobbin thread. When you are inserting the bobbin into the bobbin holder the thread should come down in the shape of a "P" as you are looking at it...not a "9".

The flat side goes to the left. Whenever I change the needle I still check to make sure - and I've been sewing on this same machine for nearly 40 years! The eye of the needle DOES NOT face the front and you thread from right to left. Enjoy!
