I was given this machine.. and for the life of me I can't get the needle to pick up the bobbin thread to lock the stitches...followed the instructions on threading.....bobbin case functions when I run the machine...but no bobbin thread hooking to top thread....I hate to junk it as it can be a good machine for a beginner....what have I overlooked?

Either the needle isn't in facing the right way, or it's the wrong needle.
I don't know what kind of machine it is but those are about the two most common causes for not picking up the bobbin thread I've read on the sewing forums.
Could you post us a pic of the little thing?
