The 148.xxx series of Kenmore machines were made by Soryu and made in Japan.

Don't feel bad - I have a Singer 15-30 from 1892 near as I can tell - I have the tension apart - all but the post - it is stuck in there but good. It has to come apart because it has a broken tension spring to be replaced. The other two stuck screws are the throat plate screws.
