I just received a singer serger. My mother who is 90 had a serger that my sister had given to her after upgrading to a five thread model. My mother gave it to me yesterday while I was visiting her helping clean her house. She has recently been told she has alzheimer's. I started on it this morning, cleaning it as it had not been used for a really long time. It was locked up. I cleaned it to start with, them started trying to get unlocked I oiled it and kept trying to get it to move and after 45 minutes it started moving, have it started now and threaded I have stitched and adjusted and think it looks pretty good concerning the condition it was in. I am so excited now with oil all over me and dust in my face I'm a really happy sewer!

I'm so sorry to hear about your Mother's diagnosis. That must be so difficult to go through. What a treasure you received from her, I hope you'll be able to post us some pictures. Great you got it moving! I have big old Kenmore that has a frozen needlebar. Maybe I should bust out the oil and see if that works for me too!

I have my mother's serger too!
I am so sorry about your mom, she's lucky to have you tho! Remember while you're caring for her to take care of yourself and take time for yourself! Hard to do, I know...but important!

I love to sew with the serger...and I totally get how excited you are about yours!! Congrats!

Friday afternoon after I posted this had to make emergency trip back there, it is a three and half hour drive, got there and she was out of it, imagining things and really violent. Got her to hospital and she had UTI. She is till here, getting great care and will go to another facility to receive therapy for her mind and body, having trouble getting my father to accept it, they are both 89 and frail but will not move in with me or my younger sister. I was so excited to get the serger going and had to leave. Will be here living in hotels for a while. I will post a picture when I get back home. Maybe 3 or 4 weeks.

I have one thats about 20yrs old and hasn't been used for about 19yrs. I've wondered lately if I got it out if it would still work. I'm not even sure if I still have the manuals that show how to thread it. I have been considering buying one from my Viking dealer but want one of those auto threaders. I have Nancy Zimmermans book on quilting with a serger and now I'm starting to get back into making clothes and even with my embroidery machine I can see me using it alot more now. This might be the encouragement I need to get it out and see if it'll come back to life.

Good luck with your mom and I hope all goes well. I agree with another, make sure you take sometime while being a good daughter and do something for your self.

Thanks every one for your well wishes, still here, my sister sent to her home for her RV. We are living in it at Wal-Mart parking lot. We can fix our meals and food for my father who is staying with her at night. She goes into nursing facility tomorrow, he can not stay all night after she moves, I am very nervous about what s going to happen when it becomes a reality. She as had two episodes today, had to get nurses to come help me, I was there alone with her and my father, it took three nurses to calme her down, he stood there in a daze himself I almost lost it. Her sister died two years ago, she had alzheimers also. I am researching what I can start doing to reduce my risk of ending up the same way. Can't wait till I go home and use my machine. Might have to oil it again by the time I get to go home.

I just got home again only for the day, need to go back today. I got to walk thru my sewing room for about 2 minutes. Miss it bad, but it will still be there when my mother is better. Tomorrow is her 89th birthday, we are going to have cake and ice cream for the whole floor, wish us good luck.
