Did you check out the $200 Singer buttonholer attachment below the "treddle" adverstisement? Wow, they are seriously smoking the best stuff!

The original dry rotted 100 year old leather "cord" is the first thing I look for.

But...the needle is in good condition and they believe it might even work. My cat can take better pictures than that!!
