So Many Machines
I have been blessed with many sewing machines,
I’m not trying to brag though by any means.
Why so many you ask? Why not one or two?
Well if you have time, I’ll explain it to you.
My passion is just to collect what I can,
to use them for sewing is part of my plan.
I have my favorite for each use too it seems,
some for a top stitch, and then others for seams.
I sew some thick fabrics and some that are thin,
wovens, vinyls, and some leathers now and then.
I use some for mending, and others for hems,
I have lots of choices with all of these gems.
Some powered, some handcranked, and some treadles too,
I select a machine by what it can do.
Some feet on them walk, others roll, hop, or slide,
and most can be outfitted with a seam guide.
Large needles and small ones, there is quite a range,
and a few with two shafts that look kind of strange.
And threads, oh my goodness, I have lots of those,
many sizes and colors, you know how that goes!
But all of my stitchers, both pretty or rough,
some dainty & fragile, and those that are tough,
All have their uses, ‘cause they sew different things,
and they all have their place in my herd it seems.
Not one of them new, they are all second hand,
some look pretty rough, others simply look grand.
Who’s had them before me, and what did they sew?
of their past service, only few do I know.
Sometimes I take pause, and reflect on their life,
did they sew for a Tailor, or for a wife?
Did they work in the city, town, or a farm?
some seem to be well-kept, and others have harm.
Sometimes when I get one, I take just a bit,
to admire its lines, run my eyes over it.
At times by just looking, it seems I can tell,
the ones mistreated and the ones treated well.
Once cleaned up and serviced, most tend to sew great,
these old vintage machines are truly first rate!
I can’t keep them all, so some get sent away,
in hopes they will make some other sewer’s day.
I don’t want to sound cold, unloving, or mean,
but I don’t always bond with every machine.
I have to use them for a while to see,
which ones feel just right for a sewer like me.
And once one feels right and seems like a fit,
I look to find projects so I can use it.
So now you know why I collect these old things,
My Antique, Vintage, and Old Sewing Machines.
