It is a White machine, by manufacturer. Do you suppose that it is kept in the house. How long has it been since they opened it. I can't imagine how they did that without putting some marks in the dust.

It's a White Westinghouse. When you raise the lid the machine comes up on a cable. So no finger prints or disturbed spiders. I have on like it minus dust and spiders.

The Eldredge B you picture is probably from the 1890's; the fiddle-base version was manufactured in the 1880's. (Per Charles Law.) If you'll notice, the treadle itself once had the initials of the manufacturer; parts of it have broken away. The cabinet looks a lot like my New England Queen, also a National machine.

I was wondering something, is it possible to turn a reg treadle head into a hand crank?
Can you buy hand cranks for them?

My niece wants to learn and someone said that hand cranks are easier for kids so I was thinking of putting a crank on my red eye.

I have been using Boye sz 14 in all my National machines, but 20 x 1 (a common needle size) should work fine. If you're in a hurry, try a 15 X 1 and "cheat" the needle down a little in the holder. Just be careful not to put it too low so that it falls out or breaks.

Older Singer machines (Class 66/99, Class 15, 27/127, 28/128) can be converted, as well as some Japanese Class 15 machines. Hand cranks are readily available; don't buy off Ebay, as price is higher there.

It makes me wonder how they got the machine up out of the cabinet without leaving fingerprints on it...

:oops: should have read further. I didn't realize there was a chain mechanism to lift it.

Boy, they should have cleaned it up, though!
