Also what is an average price on thise 301s that everyone keeps talking about? I take it that they are ideal for quilting. Gosh - this is SO contagious!
I have two 66's, one is the Redeye. They are a great machine, but neither of mine is electric. Mine are both treadles!

It looks like the needle was hitting the bobbin case but it was fine for two days, what happened? My DH has worked on it but hasn't a clue as to what it needs other than he thinks it needs timed. How do we do that? I found a service manual on line but the pics are so dark it's hard to understand what they are saying. I love to sew on this machine but I guess that's over.
Are you using the 206 style of needle? If you use a 15x1 modern needle it will hit the bobbin case. It doesn't need to be retimed, it just needs the proper needle

I think when I read " . . . . the slant needle model machines were the last all-metal gear machines that Singer made," quoted from New England Simple Living, that they meant for a 'new' model. The 503a was a new machine, only manufactured from 1960-1962, even though the serial numbers were issued by the company starting in 1951, "most of the machines, if not all, were made between 1960 and 1962."

The FW, on the other hand, had been manufactured since the early 30's! Geeze, if you have one made in 1964, you have one of the last made. I have one of the first FW's made in 1935 and another one made in 1953. Love those FW's!

LOL! This forum is extremely contagious! I have plenty of the 'vintage ladies' and two 'vintage guys' to sew on. I am just afraid to piece on a treadle; but I am going to give it a go! Not with my Mystery Quilt, but with a simple Turning 20 Again patern!

Nancy
You really need to try it--you won't want to go back to an electric for piecing.

I recently did the same when I went into a second hand store. The machine kept screaming take me home. I left the store without the pretty lady the first time since I found out that all items are half price on Saturdays. Went back two weeks later to find her waiting for me. So, now I have a second Singer 66-1 with the brown decals. I do believe they find you.:)

Just google for a free manual, that is what I did.

I love all of mine too. I will have to go check for sure the date. I would hate to mislead anyone.

I just changed my avatar picture. Its a double sawtooth star quilt top, made with my Singer 201K treadle. Its almost
all pieced now, just 2 more blocks to finish and then it needs borders.
