Billy do you have the thread guide and wheel/casters?

Oh and Quiltaddict, I haven't decided if I am going to keep this machine or not, but if I decide to let her go, you can have her for the $25 I paid plus the needles if you still want her.

Our sewing head is just like yours. But, the cabinet is different, it opens the same way but the cabinet is darker and has the curved front and drawers. Yours looks prettier than ours right now but will work on that. If we keep it we will have to paint it because someone spilled something on it that has eaten the finish away. I tried sewing again and she does sew good with me trying to learn the treadle.

what she looks like now

I went to look at a 27 in a cabinet this morning and she stole my heart. (she's a 1904 model) I figured she'd be in a barn and covered with, well, you know, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Although she comes without a history, because this fellow bought her with the intent to restore her, she was a prize.
I know I said my 27 was going to go in the trrash, do you really think I could ? Just frustration talking. Thanks for the suggestion re: quilting store display. I have a few other bright ? ideas also. Will keep everyone updated if anything new surfaces. Thanks all. BTW: all kinds of good luck with your new baby.
She is lucky to have found you.
The machine itself, is a sphinx model. The decal is in remarkable shape with only a little bit of wear on the front left corner. She's dust, and grimy, but otherwise workable. She has no belt (treadle) right now, but with turning the handwheel, it turns smoothly. She needs the front bobbin plate.
At first he said there was not a shuttle or bobbin with the purchase, but when we opened the drawers there was a shuttle and 3 bobbins in a baggie - in pristine condition!
The cabinet is the 4 drawer type, it has a small missing piece of wood/veneer at the back left attachment hinge, and the front left corner of the front "flap" part that holds her up. The front drawer that goes in the middle front, is there, but the right corner piece is missing - but it is of simple enough design that any woodworker ( or me) could easily make a mirror image from the left one.
So, after talking with the gentleman for a while, I couldn't leave her there, and for $60, she came home with me.
Does anyone know what wood the cabinets are made from? I'd love to find some to match and stain it to match.
Billy - I'll be contacting you about the belt(and clip) and the front bobbin plate!
I am a happy camper today. Can't wait to rearrange furniture to find her a place!

Am I the only one who's having trouble remembering who-just-bought-what-machine and what the machine looks like and what its characteristics are?

It would be so helpful (for me, at least!) if this thread could be subdivided into different topics in the same way as the home page is, only by Brand name and model #. There's a wealth of interesting and informative info in these 521 pages, and there'll certainly be more to come, but it's next to impossible to find.

I will, I am thinking of just doing a dustbunny cleanup and adding a new belt ~ get her running, do a quick lapquilt with DD (she is already raiding the stash, she's so excited)... then when the weather warms in spring, we can move it to the porch for complete teardown... that way we may get her up and running for a little while :) worth a try!
I am drooling looking at you model 27 in the treadle cabinet. I have a model 27 machine but no cabinet. Having waited this long I am now giving her up . Going out in trash tomorrow. It's killing me but she has to go. So SAD.
Don't throw it away. Offer it on the board for free plus shipping. I am sure someone will want her.

If anyone is interested, please PM me.

from what I understand, that is the 3/4 version of my 27 (or the 127's) - it is only a few inches shorter in width. The book that I have for the 127/128 shows they both use shuttles. Book doesn't say how much the 128 weighs, tho... my users manual says that the 127/128 have the locking stitch, as well as an ejector for the shuttles. Billy may know if those are the big improvements to those models?
Have you used your "new one" yet?
How is dealing with the shuttle? Is it difficult to thread?

Oh my! Jill, she is absolutely beautiful! I can't believe you waited so long to test her out. She looks perfect. Enjoy your new little beauty - you will love sewing on her.

I have a 128. They not a full sized machine. They are 3/4 sized and weigh as much as a full sized. I had my 128 converted to a hand-crank. See my avatar. It has a bullet shaped suttle.

The warranty from when the machine was originally bought is there and dated 1895.
And it works. No manual though, which I usually like to have to refer to in my old age. Any thoughts pro or con would be greatly appreciated.
Diamondrose, I have two Wheeler & Wilson machines. One is posted on page 419, it is from 1887, and it is an authentic W&W - the other one is posted on page 265. It is a Singer 9W from 1910, which is really a W & W that Singer made after they took over the W&W factory. I love those W&W, but they take a special obsolete needle 127x1 or Boye 18 that you can sometimes find on E-bay-- also, the wheel goes away from instead of towards you. They are great machines! ISMACS or Needlebar have manuals you can download for free.

Trish, I hate to sound like I am repeating myself, but did you actually sew with thread and the shuttle threaded?

When you get the Davis cleaned up it is going to be beautiful. Your cabinet is beautiful. I haven't seen one like it. ISMACS has a manual.
