Judy I HAVE seen a red one - fire engine red to be exact -- I want one really bad! They were made in metallic blue, green, pink, yellow, and fire engine red! Yep, that red one is on my wish list for sure!

Nancy
Nancy - I hope you find that Fire Engine Red one so you can post a picture and I can live my SM treasure hunting life vicariously through you :) Maybe even a yellow one would be nice.

I think I need rehab.... I just imagined how fun it would be for Spring to have multi-colored SM's setup in the sewing room.

NICE! find. You should keep that Dressmaker; I would. I would remove the motor, put it in a cabinet with treadle, and use those decorative cams in my quilting. My last quilt, I used a decorative stitch as a transition in the fabrics and the free motion quilting.
Lucky you! Keep that machine with all those cams and used it!

She ain't moving.

The light on the machine remained on so I am pretty sure the problem lies with the foot pedal. But, what would cause it to heat up like that and why won't it move?

Anyone, know what is going on here? To my recollection this has not happened before in the 36 years I have had her. Hopefully, someone knows what's going on. Thanks for any help you can give me. Nice chatting with y'all again. :-D :-D
I have the same machine, and it's about my third one... When they get old and have that much use on the foot controller, those controllers go out. I have had to change mine before. I don't know why your pedal is getting so hot, but most likely it was the electrical problem in the controller that caused it. There is nothing wrong with your machine, that 's the good news-- it's all in the controller. Now for the bad news: a replacement controller is about $150. Outrageous. If you know someone who repairs machines you might could get them to order you one wholesale, but retail they are about $150.

I bought them from sellers on Ebay before. I just looked and found this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Bernina-Foot-Con...item35b15beb20
However, this one is not a new replacement, it's another old one. You would be investing a lot of money, and would be likely to have the problem again not too far down the road. There are NEW replacements you can get, but they are no longer made by Bernina. It will look just like the one you have now, and work fine, but it won't say "Bernina" at the top of the pedal like your old one.

There don't seem to be any on Ebay currently (besides the old one, above) so I would Google "sewing machine parts" and find an online dealer, unless you know someone locally who can get it for you.

Yep I have a bag full of them right now!! Revco was the aftermarket kings in the sewing industry. They had items like your "Quick Release" presserfoot tensioner to the "Reverse Switch" on the machines that did not have the back tack feature.

I happen to love them because after I use a machine I just hit it take the tension off of the presserfoot and Store the machine. It keeps the spring from loosing any preload or strength while its sitting around doing nothing. In fact I always take the pressure off of the presserfoot no matter what.

Billy
Thanks Billy for the explanation. Makes perfect sense :) So when you store your SM's - how do you take the presser off the presser foot? I have always stored mine with the presser foot down and folded muslin underneth the foot.

Judy
I just loosen the tension knob up until there is no tension on the foot. Then put a piece of broadcloth under it and I am good to go.

So when your not sewing on a machine you leave the presser foot up? I was taught in home ec that you leave the foot down especially when you are traveling w/a portable machine. It makes sense to leave it up though.
No I leave it down but there is no tension on the presserfoot at all. you can slide fabric around the thing like your FMQ. I was taught to always take the tension of of my Torque Wrenches before I store them because they would loose their calibration, and you are not suppose to leave your air rifles cocked because you will loose the tension on the springs. So I just do the same thing to my machines out of habit.

What do you recommed I use for cleaning her? The black needs polishing and gunk removed but the decals are delicate and some what thin so I want to be careful. Thanks anyone and Billy too
Go to my Tutorials and follow them, they will get you through the cleaning and polishing process.

As my grandmother would say, "Vidi, vici, vinci." I came, I saw, I conquered - not really!! Lusted after sew many machines at the preview for the machine auction. I have 20 plus pics of the machines and would have more but the batteries died in the camera. DH just groaned when he saw all the machines - he knew I wasn't walking out without getting one. Bad news is that auction is on Sunday - Palm Sunday which is a Sunday service I will not miss despite the temptations only 20 mins from my house. So I wandered around and found 5 301s with attachments and looked to be in good shape. Went and talked to the folks running the auction. They gave me a bid card which I filled out with name and phone # and then listed the machines that I would bid on if I were to be there. OKay, there were more I would like but DH only puts up with so much tomfoolery from me with my sewing machine obsession. I then put down my maximum bid and will hope for the best. I did say I only wanted one and the auctioneer seemd reasonably confident that I would have the winning bid on one of them. I sure hope so. What he was worried about was that at the end, they be lots of 10 to 15 machines for maybe only $50 bucks for the lots. There were at least 4 FWs and two were white ones.

How many photos do I post on here or should I open up a new topic? Don't want to hog too much space.

W&W #8 with glass presser foot.
