Mpeters, always start with a new needle -- even then you can sometimes get a batch of bad needles! Make sure the needle is inserted correctly with the flat side to the right.

Nancy, its amazing how the Singer treadles stood the test of time. It seems they were made to last forever. I used my mom's treadle for years until I went to work and bought an electric Fleetwood. It is over 50 years old and still sews great.

I marvel at the engineering and the machining work in my old sewing machines - Now days, everything metal is stamped or they just make it out of plastic. We will never see such precision ever again I fear.
