I would diddo the above. Jenny has your stuff!!! She has the attachments, the spool felts, the little bobbin winder belt and her bobbins are good ones and inexpensive. Those 404 machines were used in schools for girls to learn to sew. Refurbished, you will LOVE that machine. It is just a stripped down 401 or 403 - no bells and whistles but it is a good solid machine. It isn't terribly heavy & it won't dance off your table. As far as sewing heavy stuff, it will sew through but if you are doing big pieces of canvas etc, you will really need a walking foot so that the needle bar doesn't bend. The weight can pull too much on the needle bar. Now how would I know that???

Have you oiled the machine yet? Sometimes that helps... most of the time, people really crank on the stop action knob...and it's really not necessary! You may just have to get Western with it. (Grab it and force it loose)

LOL, I'll try getting western with it! It did not come with a manual, so I guess it's back to youtube to see if there are instructions there on how to oil it.

The only difference is the Spartan has a bobbin winder that is slightly easier to convert. Usually, they go for less $.

Yep, you'd should have picked up the Spartan! The Spartan is the lower end Singer 99, but because there are way fewer Spartans than there are 99's, it is worth more! Billy says, Spartans are money in the bank!

Please keep in mind that I'm not real smart and just couldn't find your PDA on the board.....am I supposed to be looking somewhere else ? Please give me explicit instructions....I tend to follow instructions well.

My real question is that I bought a Singer Athena 1200 yesterday at a thrift store and want to know your thoughts on the series.....thanks for info !
