My husband came over to take a look and thinks it is the walking foot. Machines stitches very nicely without the walking foot and intermittent with it.
The last time I used the walking foot on the 201, I had some problems too. At that time, I thought it was the machine.
Been quilting with the Davis NVF and having no problems. Thank God for having the Davis since I want this quilt done today.

I've gotten skipped stitches with some of my various other vintage machines for the same reason. I have much better results with a bigger needle in these, especially when I'm sewing through 5 layers of fabric when putting on a binding.

For those skip stitching on these vintage machines while quilting,
Is a jeans needle a good substitute for the universals?
Or a leather needle?
I'm planning to shop at JoAnn's tonight; so, I will pick up more machine needles.

My sister buys needles in bulk - so much cheaper - we split an order. You do not want a leather needle. Those have a special point on them and will tear the fabric if it has any stress. If you are sewing heavy stuff get some 16s or 18s. I buy them in bulk and throw them out frequently with out stressing myself out. My commercial walking foot will take a 22 or a 24 but I try to use a 20 - if I'm going through some real heavy stuff I change needles.

YUP! The Davis is the better machine since it is designed with a walking foot. I should have used the Davis to start with, but I wanted to work in living room so that I could keep my husband company while he watched tv. My 201 is in living room. I have been thinking of switching the machines, but the Davis is much louder than the Singer 201.
