Glenn is right, your Vindex Special with the top tension and V shuttle is made by National. It also takes a 20x1 needle! Miriam, I think that machine is going to really be cute when you get her cleaned up!

Here is a Brunswick, also made by National, for a really good price considering the cabinet has been re-done and is in excellent shape! Very pretty looking unit! There has been a Brunswick on CL here in town for the last few months, but they are asking $300!! It is a very attractive machine, but not for $300.

I have a chance to buy a working big sister to a Featherweight(301A ???) but it has no accessories...are they difficult to find, and anyone have an idea how pricey the accessories are? thank you for your help, Naomi

Cathy that 99 DOES have a bent shaft. I put a treadle type balance wheel on it and a hand crank and it works but I wonder if it will cause any damage to just use it like it is.

Using the 99 with a bent mainshaft should not cause further damage in most cases. I would, however, ask a few questions, before
Sewing with it. Do you feel any rubbing or binding? Does the large spoked handwheel rub on anything? If no to both of these questions, then I'd feel comfortable using the machine. The wobbly handwheel may drive you crazy, though. I had to straighten a bent shaft on a Singer 28 since I couldn't stand that wobbly handwheel.

Another Amerikan question....In the instructions I got from Nancy it says the hand wheel goes away from the sewer. I realize this wasn't for my machine, but some like it. Should I be making my handwheel spin backwards from other machines I own? Also...in very recent discussion about this top tension...are there supposed to be 2 metal pieces or one? Mine has one but has little like "hooks" which I assume thread goes through.
