Default Need Help With This Machine

I am posting a picture of my dh's grandmother's 1901 Singer treadle machine and a picture of the shuttle area in the hopes that someone can tell me what model it is and what type of shuttle I need to find for it. Otherwise, the machine is in working condition although it does need to be cleaned up, oiled and lubricated.'

Oh, oh, I can help on this one! The model is a 27. The decaling is known as either the Sphinx, Memphis or Egyptian. You'll need a 3/16" belt and the needle is the common 15x1. Bobbin is the S228 and the shuttle is 8327.

My teachers/mentors will be along shortly to grade my answers :-) I'm so hoping I passed.

(I recently came into custody of one of these darlings.)

Enjoy,
best,
d

We have a local 'rag' called Uncle Henry's (UH) that is similar to Craigslist where folks buy, trade and sell. My dh's brother called yesterday to say he saw a 'White' treadle for sale in New Hampshire. Not that I need another machine but something made me hop onto the UH's website - btw, if you're not a subscriber, you only get to view some of the posts. I spied this machine. HOLY HANNAH!! I don't know much yet about A & V machines but I knew this machine doesn't come a dime a dozen (please pardon the cliche). I tried getting hold of my not-so-local mentor for her opinion and advice but imagine, she probably has a life :-) So a quick drive by the ATM for cash and we're off. The seller's asking price was $85. He was thrilled to hear I would be using her and not reselling it. The price agreed upon by the men left enough to pay our entrance into the dance last night - can you imagine?! I would have paid the $85 and split town so fast before the seller had a chance or wanted to renig.

She's a darling little thing and I can't wait to try her out. Dh found a length of belt (so I can skip the too-skinny pantyhose idea) so the only thing left to do is to get her slide plates opened and change the bobbin winder ring. We have her setting with some lub along the plate edges. If you have any suggestions, please, let me know. We have tried a dowel and rubber mallet and tapping in the finger groove but she's fairly locked in. The shuttle is in place. With the exception of the marring on the front slide plate she looks pretty darn good. Her table will need some work come spring time. The seller says there was a 'box of attachments and stuff' that is in the attic. He promised to try and locate it and call me with seven days. What a guy!

Enjoy!

And a huge 'Thank you and a hug' to my west coast friend, who wrote back 'OMG!! GO GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!

best,
d
What a beautiful machine!!! I'm glad that you got her so she will be appreciated. Great find !!!

She's been using the Coats and Gutermann machine quilting thread on her quilts that come on the cardboard tubes. Those tubes just flop around on the spool pins so I've been drilling out the 3/8" dowel rod pieces for those.

Works really good. Keeps the big hole spools nice and straight.

We've also got some of the smaller cones that have a big hole on the bottom and a smaller hole on top. The thread on those is perfect for the felt bags I make but that plastic cone flops around something awful. So I made some adapters for that using the dowel rod and cut off rims of larger spools.

I order a lot of my stuff from Sew-Classic and they have spool pins for the Singers that use the tap in pin with holes in them for use when use the large cones with the stands. Well, according to their text that helps keep the tension consistent by following the same path you'd use with the standard thread spools.
But - what if your machine has a good spool pin? Sure not going to yank it out just to put one in with a hole, so I was yacking with my wife and had an epiphany. I headed down to the basement and in 10 minutes had the little adapter built. Tried it out and it works great.
I've not tried the big cones with just the stand, it's kind of like the adapter came first then I hunted up the thread to try it.

As for worrying about the strength of the thread, not at all. I've tried it in two of my Singer 66s, one electric and one treadle and it's not broken once. I also tried it in my HOTHER and it flowed through the the mechanism slick as a greased door nob. The singers have the horizontal bobbin set up which is a bit harder on the thread and it's tension, I had to adjust them both. The HOTHER has the vertical bobbin set up and it didn't need anything.

Now my wife wants me to make another one so she can use some of the bigger spools on the 319K.

Joe
Wow, Joe I love all your cool ideas with the large holed spools! I have tons of serger thread too, but I have never tried using it to sew with as I was always told in classes that the serger thread is much weaker than regular thread because on a serger you use two to four or more threads at once. Good to know you can get by with using that stuff. Great photos capturing what you are talking about! You have some really great ideas to enable us to use those larger spools or those spools with the large holes!

The badge says SEAWOL SEWING SUPPLIES, Deluxe Model, Sold Throughout the World. On the side of the piller under the wheel at the botton is a decal that says SEAWOL Model B15- (the last part is missing). The motor is a BELGELCOR Type W73.

As you can see she has not been cleaned up and I did not even unwrap the foot controller. She does have enough pin rash that the Sew is missing from Sewmagic. And the spool pin is bent.
Caroline, nice machine but I had to laugh when I saw she has wheels? Nice green decals too! I bet she sews perfectly, but the wheels tell me she must be awfully heavy LOL!

But here's the BIG NEWS! I just got all three slide plates off!!!!! Wahoo. I'm stoked. We didn't put her belt on today in case we had to take her off the table to try budging her plates. But hold your breath folks, I'm going belt her up, thread 'er up and give her a go tomoree.

Obviously with the plates off we were able to access the shuttle. Indeed there is a bobbin in there but God's truth, I'm scared to death looking and trying to figure out how the shuttle is threaded. ISMACS, here I come. If anyone has experience with this type of shuttle and you feel like jawing, I'm a captive audience :-)

You know, four weeks ago there wasn't a treadle in the house. Now there are, um, some. It's sorta like sauerkraut, you love treadling or you hate it. I equate it with my first experience at a Pow-Wow. The first drum beat I heard woke up my insides like nothing I have ever experienced. That is how these machines are to me. I talk about them to my 'elder' friends and they look at me like I lost it. Sorta like motorcycling - if you don't ride, it can't be explained.

Keep your fingers crossed for me. I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight with all this excitement. Wahoo!! (as she lets out a loud, happy yelp.)

best,
d

Enjoy!
Deb, there is no cure for what you are going through now. You will be searching always for more machines. I got my first treadle just cus I thought it looked cool and I just wanted 'one!' I now have treadles everywhere in this house and I have a storage cargo unit full of them! I have over 40 machines now (a mixture of vintage electric machines and treadles) and I can't help myself I keep looking for more! Yes, all my friends have accepted the fact that I do the majority of my sewing on treadles! But, I know they all think I am crazy given I have a $7,000 modern machine that I don't use!

Some notes,
Nancy, have you tried a different brand metallic thread. When I have done decorative stitches with my Elna on Christmas tree skirts, one brand of metallic thread would be terrible and the next work amazingly well. It wasn't the machine. .
Yes, Judy I have tried different brands. I actually started using Superior because I was told it won't be a problem metallic and I have had very good results with other machines.

Did you try putting your slide plate on from the needle side? Some slide plates go on from the needle side and not from the left toward the bed - but from the needle side toward the outside.

Sewok, that is a 27 with the Sphinx decal like Deb said. What is the serial number? Be very careful cleaning her to keep those decals that are left intack! It is always really nice to have a family member's machine. Those machines should be appreciated and kept in the family! Congratulations!

The others have already told you what you have, so I won't repeat that, other that to say how wonderful to have your grandmother's machine!! I think she's beautiful!!

Don't use anything but sewing machine oil to clean her with!! After you have her cleaned, use a good resin type of car wax (non abrasive) to polish and protect her remaining decals.

I have to say, I'd give up every machine I own to have my grandmother's machine...what a special treasure you have!!
